Ged, the greatest sorcerer in all Earthsea, was called Sparrowhawk in his reckless youth.

Hungry for power and knowledge, Sparrowhawk tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. This is the tale of his testing, how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death's threshold to restore the balance.

I tend to hold that a noticeable narration is adding too much, and this is one such case, adding a little too much seasoning to Le Guin's beautiful but unassuming prose for my taste. But I enjoyed the performance and the book is a genre-transcending classic. Well worth a listen.

Narration a touch salty

I wanted something light and easy to listen to in the car and thought I would revisit this old childhood favourite. I'd forgotten how dark and thoughtful it is, with the anti-hero Ged battling...himself? Evil?
Absolutely brilliant reading from Kobna Holdbrook-Smith - I'll definitely be looking for more narration by him.

One of the best read audiobooks I've listened to

this story deserves to be known the world around. it's unique on the level of Tolkien and Martin with lore that makes me wish for an accurate adaptation so I can see the world my mind imagines

epic

It's a nice story, good telling, slow to start but this also the beginning of the series so I'm interested in seeing how it goes.

Good

An absolute classic, read and performed beautifully. Le Guin is brilliant, of course, and this reading does her justice! Excellent!
