In Underland, Robert Macfarlane takes us on a journey into the worlds beneath our feet. From the ice-blue depths of Greenland's glaciers, to the underground networks by which trees communicate, from Bronze Age burial chambers to the rock art of remote Arctic sea-caves, this is a deep-time voyage into the planet's past and future. Global in its geography, gripping in its voice and haunting in its implications, Underland is a work of huge range and power, and a remarkable new chapter in Macfarlane's long-term exploration of landscape and the human heart.

Best nature non fiction!
Underland by Robert MacFarlane
Robert Macfarlane takes us on a journey into deep time. A journey into the depths of the earth; into the caves, the roots of a forest, the deep sea and glaciers. He looks back into space and time, through mythology and etymology to explore the hidden reaches of the earth and to face the future of our planet and the human race.
He shares this journey with some wonderfully brave and quirky characters. I loved Merlin, the mystical fungi and mycorrhizal expert.
There is so much of this book that I wanted to note down, to quote, to share. It begins with beautifully elegant prose, a love song to the earth and embarks on a deep voyage across the globe, uncovering what lies down in the depths below the surface and how we’ve become a major force of nature in the anthropocene epoch.
Not only does this book explore nature but it also asks how we can be better ancestors?
I was fascinated by the ‘wood wide web’ a collaborative forest system. Macfarlane writes, “ If there is human meaning to be made of the wood wide web, it is surely that what might save us as we move forward into the precarious, unsettled centuries ahead is collaboration, mutualism, symbiosis, the exclusive human work of collective decision making extended to more than human communities.”
It’s a fascinating five star read... if you only read one nature book in your entire life, make it this one!

everything you want from an audio book
from the way it's read by Roy Macmillan, to the subtle sounds that bring you into each chapter the sounds of this audio book is phenomenal! it's one of my go tos of easy listening because, I always discover a new recomendation from Robert MacFarlane. who samples books like beats to create this overview of the anthropocene, whilst giving us all of his reference material I really commend him on his style of writing as an introduction to literature about climate, nature and exploration you need look no further I must have downloaded about 10 excellent books from his research all of which helped me to understand the subject matter. everything you could want from an audio book!

A great listen
I saw the cover in a book shop and was drawn to it immediately but thought it looked a little to heavy for me to read on holiday or when going to bed.
About a year later I broke my arm and missing reading books joined Audible and it was my first choice to download.
I spent many hours escaping from life and the inconvenience of my arm listening to and enjoying this read.
Thank you

Sensational, beautiful and terrifying
The author manages to blend adventure and exploration with history, ecology, geology, anthropology and so much more. The poetic writing and perfect narration make this a must read.
