About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Gemini by Dorothy Dunnett, read by John Banks.

GEMINI represents the final appearance of Nicholas de Fleury, who opened this series as a carefree, clumsy 18 year old apprentice in Flanders. Now he is in his thirties. The culmination of this amazing series sees Niccolo face his toughest battle yet, against an enemy who will tax every skill he has acquired over the course of the last few years...

Critic reviews

Praise for Dorothy Dunnett

(-)
A storyteller who could teach Scheherazade a thing or two about pace, suspense and imaginative invention (-)
Marvellous, breathtaking (-)
A masterpiece of historical fiction (-)
One of the greatest tale-spinners since Dumas (-)
Lashings of excitement, colour and subtlety (-)
Vivid, engaging, densely plotted - are almost certainly destined to be counted among the classics of popular fiction (-)
Dunnett's legion of devoted readers will need no recommendation to buy Gemini. They would, I imagine, walk barefoot to the bookshop over broken glass to get it ... Anyone reading this novel, even as an introduction to Dunnett's work will, I suspect, join that band of admirers (-)

Sad to finish this saga. Fabulous writing and fittingly good narration. Niccolo and Lymond my favourite heroes. Read and love.

A wonderful journey from a wonderful author

Both the Niccolo and Lymond series are brilliant and I cannot understand how they have not been scooped up and turned into a fabulous Netflix series. Meanwhile it is lovely to have them on Audible.

Why not a film?

This, the final book of Dorothy Dunnett's House of Niccolò series, is outstanding in every respect. Her writing is at its finest, the intricacies of the plot and the final drawing together of all the strands of this eight book series are masterful, the larger-than-life characters are exceptionally well-drawn, the skilful weaving in of throughly-researched historical events is unsurpassed, and John Banks' skill a a narrator is exceptional - I will be coming back to listen to this again and again.

Well I have to say as usual in every single one these books in the series there was an unexpected twist. Never even for one moment did I consider this twist. A fitting ending to a really great series. I have thoroughly enjoyed every single book.
John Banks is brilliant as the narrator all the way through. Other Narrators / actors take note, just because you can act and rely on the visual effect, does not mean you can narrate and hold a listening audience spell bound.

A Really Great Series

Now I have reread the whole Nicolo series, and don't think it impossible that I will read the books yet again; there is so much content that different parts spring to the foreground on a second reading. The only annoying thing about this particular book is the mispronunciation of Scottish place names, and the use of "burg" instead of "borough" throughout. Anyone who has lived in Edinburgh knows it is Boroughmuir, and this doesn't preclude talking about the inhabitants as "burgers".

Authentic accent, but many mispronunciations.
