About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of There There by Tommy Orange, read by Darrell Dennis, Shaun Taylor-Corbett, Alma Cuervo and Kyla Garcia.

Jacquie Red Feather and her sister Opal grew up together, relying on each other during their unsettled childhood. As adults they were driven apart, but Jacquie is newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind. That’s why she is there.

Dene is there because he has been collecting stories to honour his uncle's death. Edwin is looking for his true father. Opal came to watch her boy Orvil dance. All of them are connected by bonds they may not yet understand.

All of them are there for the cultural celebration that is the Big Oakland Powwow.

But Tony Loneman is also there. And Tony has come to the Powwow with darker intentions.

'There There is a propulsive, groundbreaking novel, polyphonic and multigenerational, weaving together an array of contemporary Native American voices into a singularly dynamic and original meta-narrative about violence and recovery, about family and loss, about identity and power.' Derek Palacio

What an amazing debut. The tapestry of this novel is comprised of so many colors and threads and textures I want to go back and listen to it all over again now that I’ve finished it. With kaleidoscopic effect, the author sweeps through the lives of a broad-reaching, damaged clan, Delivering multiple portraits of its members, with gravitas, humor, and a 21st century lust for life that makes the devastating finale all the more impactful. Beautifully told by several actors, it’s a masterpiece of a novel, and an unforgettable audiobook.

Extraordinary. A must-listen.

This is a book to listen to and read at least twice. It is worth sitting with. The multiple narrators on Audible really support this process and bring it to life as a profound commentary on American society at our historical moment. Thank you Tommy Orange.

The multiple narrators of this book really gave something special to this as an audiobook, and gave the characters real distinction which was valuable whilst following such a large cast- 12 perspectives/stories.

This book shines a light on an underrepresented population and their often overrepresented issues in a way that cannot help but draw deep empathy from the reader/listener.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to those who enjoy a gritty and real read.
