Summary

A second wonderful collection of Just William stories, selected and read by Martin Jarvis

Richmal Crompton's stories featuring irrepressible schoolboy William Brown have been firm favourites with both young and old for decades. Perpetually scruffy, mud-stained and mischievous, he is a lovable scamp whose pranks usually end in disaster - for his harassed elders at least.

With friends Ginger, Douglas and Henry (the Outlaws) and the angelic thorn-in-his-side, the lisping Violet Elizabeth Bott, William has rightly joined the literary, and radio, immortals.

Musical Theme: Won't You Be My Ginger? composed and performed by Richard Dworsky (piano) (c) 1995 Inner Vista Music (BMI)

What really can be said ? If you have ever read William stories when young you will just adore these but sadly they are abridged versions which I didn't realise til I listened and this is sometimes to the detriment of the amusement of the story. Nevertheless these are stories which come and are set in the age of the black and white films of slapstick humour, set in the 1920's1930's and are very innocent stories of bygone times, younger versions of the P G WODEHOUSE era of life and when children were children, their games were innocent, times were safe and children could go and play in woods and gardens without health and safety nonsense and parental worry. William is 11 years old and these are all about him and the Outlaws, his 3 friends and his dog Jumble making up the gang. These however are gang stories about playing cowboys and indians, hunting spies, playing with bows and arrows, tops, mouth organs, trumpets and cricket and badminton bats. How many children really use their imagination in playtime now? Martin Jarvis has really got into his stride with the narration and the different voices he does are stupendous. The result is really gentle,, funny humour that some of us still wish applied in this day and age. Probably more appealing to adults than children now, these are nevertheless totally suitable for all, are thoroughly enjoyable and sadly now would almost certainly be dismissed by any publisher today.

Martin Jarvis was born for this. His performance is outstanding, you hear the innocent boy under the little rogue, the exasperated father and the harassed and pre-occupied mother. Unfortunately, by now, Richmal Crompton is beginning to run out of themes and so if you have already heard the first book some of the stories are a bit repetitious. If however you are, like me, an addict you will forgive her and enjoy this very stylish trip to a class ridden but comfortable society that was once ours.

As an older listener, listening to these stories is like escaping back to my childhood. I now have grandsons and recognise a lot of William and the outlaws in them.
