I went in expecting a quick bit of filler between the big Imperium Secundus novels and this absolutely floored me.
Andy Smillie does in 20 minutes what some Horus Heresy novels fail to do in 20 hours. This is Sanguinius at his most human - exhausted, reluctant, crowned as Emperor of Imperium Secundus when he wants nothing to do with it - and Azkaellon at his most terrifyingly loyal.

The premise is so simple and so dark: Azkaellon can't risk Sanguinius appearing in public with Curze loose on Macragge and traitors everywhere, so he creates a Herald to speak for him. The way Smillie shows HOW he creates that Herald... the drawing of lots, the grail, the white-hot helm seared straight onto flesh. It's brutal, it's tragic, and it perfectly sums up the Blood Angels.

It's not just body-horror for shock value. It's about loyalty curdling into monstrosity. Azkaellon genuinely believes this is what love for his father requires, and Toby Longworth's performance as Azkaellon is chilling. You can hear the burden breaking him.

The full cast is fantastic - Gareth Armstrong, Jonathan Keeble, Longworth and the rest - it sounds huge, atmospheric, properly regal and rotten at the same time.
And the lore payoff is massive. If you've ever wondered where the Sanguinor actually comes from, this is it. This is page one of a 10,000 year myth. Once you hear that final scene on Davin, every future appearance of the golden angel in 40k hits different.

Short, dark, essential. If you read The Unremembered Empire and Pharos, do not skip this.
