About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of You Can't Spell America Without Me by Alec Baldwin and Kurt Andersen, read by the authors with Oliver Wyman.

Political satire as deeper truth: Donald Trump’s presidential memoir, as recorded by two world-renowned Trump scholars, and experts on greatness generally

"I have the best words, beautiful words, as everybody has been talking and talking about for a long time. Also? The best sentences and, what do you call them, paragraphs. My previous books were great and sold extremely, unbelievably well--even the ones by dishonest, disgusting so-called journalists. But those writers didn't understand Trump, because quite frankly they were major losers. People say if you want it done right you have to do it yourself, even when 'it' is a 'memoir.' So every word of this book was written by me, using a special advanced word processing system during the many, many nights I've been forced to stay alone in the White House--only me, just me, trust me, nobody helped. And it's all 100% true, so true--people are already saying it may be the truest book ever published. Enjoy."

Until Donald Trump publishes the ultimate account of his entire four or eight or one-and-a-half years in the White House, the definitive chronicle will be You Can’t Spell America Without Me: The Really Tremendous Inside Story of My Fantastic First Year As President. Trump was elected because he was the most frank presidential candidate in history, a man eager to tell the unvarnished truth about others’ flaws and tout his own amazing excellence. Now he levels his refreshingly compulsive, un-PC candour at his landslide election victory as well as his role as commander-in-chief and leader of the free world.

There are intimate, powerful, mind-boggling revelations on every page. You are there with him during his private encounters with world leaders, a few of whom he does not insult. You are there at the genius Oval Office strategy sessions with his advisers. You are there in his White House bedroom as he crafts the pre-dawn Twitter pronouncements that rock the world. And, of course, you are there on the golf course as Trump attempts to manage the burdens of his office.

President Trump explains each of the historic decisions that have already made America great again, and how he always triumphs over the fake news media. You'll learn what he really thinks of his cabinet members and top aides not related to him, of the First Lady and the First Daughter and the additional three or four Trump children. Included at no extra charge is a lavish and exclusive portfolio of spectacular, historic and intimate colour photographs of President Trump in private – inside the White House, inside Mar-a-Lago, at Trump Tower and more.

You Can’t Spell America Without Me is presented by America’s foremost Trump scholar Kurt Andersen as well as America's foremost mediocre Trump impersonator, Alec Baldwin.

Critic reviews

Hilarious, unbelievable, and quite clearly one big long-running joke (Matt Rudd)
Iterating the many running gags would only ruin the fun. 'There will be a moment when this will be over,' Baldwin has said. 'When Trump will fade into ignominy, and take with him his ability to outstrip satire.' Will reality return to America? Until it does, books like this are ammunition. (Alasdair Lees)

Really funny audiobook. Alec Baldwin's performance makes it. So it's a shame he was either too busy or lazy to read it all and instead hands it over to two other readers. Still, worth listening to.

Great when Alec is reading.

I did often chuckle, but in the horrifying knowledge that Trump just isn’t that proficient in English - there’s a limit to what a comedian can do when the subject has a small vocabulary and a smaller mindset. Fortunately Trump has not had a classical or historical education, or he’d be off at the Olympics winning every Gold, like his soulmate Nero, also plagued by fake news, propagating nasty stories that Nero didn’t win - just because he fell out his chariot at the start of the race - no impediment for glory, obviously- Nero actually managed to rearrange the Olympic year to coincide with his tour of Greece, causing much confusion, and built a Golden House on land cleared by a suspicious fire -
don’t tell Trump, please, he’ll get ambitions to be declared a god.
Poor old Nero- all those evil dishonest journalists-Suetonius, Tacitus, Cassius Dio, and 2000 years later a modest rehabilitation by historians in need of a boost to the CV.
Those who mocked the Caesars usually found themselves exiled to some uninhabitable island or ordered to commit suicide like Seneca. Social media do the same job.

A welcome satire on a scary situation

I am really really torn about this audiobook.

First thing to be aware of - ALEC BALDWIN DOES NOT READ THE ENTIRETY OF THIS AUDIOBOOK.

And that’s the tricky part. Because when he IS reading it (probably circa 35-40% of the book, or maybe a little more), it is SIMPLY BRILLIANT. I was in two minds whether to get this because whilst SNL is amusing, it’s pretty soft, obvious broad humour. But this book it really really biting nasty satire - and when Baldwin reads it, it is laugh out loud funny - as I did, embarrassingly, walking around in public listening to it.

But when Baldwin ISN’T reading it (which is to my mind utterly inexcusable - I think if Hillary Clinton can read the entirely of her magnum opus, the least Baldwin could do is read all of this pretty short book!) it is so much flatter, less interesting and less funny.

So make of that what you will - if you can get it cheap, the best bits are amazing - but just don’t expect a consistent experience. SAD! ;-)

Brilliant (when Alec Baldwin reading)

It is quite funny but if I'm honest I'd have to say it gets very repetitive. I'm sure it could have been less than half the time.

A bit repetitive .

If you love Alec Baldwin on SNL, you will love this witty take on of the world's craziest man!!! 😂😂😂

Hilarious for lovers & haters
