About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Those we think we know best can sometimes surprise us the most . . .

After being together for ten years, Sylvie and Dan have a comfortable home, fulfilling jobs, beautiful twin girls, and communicate so seamlessly, they finish each other's sentences. They have a happy marriage and believe they know everything there is to know about each other. Until it's casually mentioned to them that they could be together for another sixty-eight years... and panic sets in.

They quickly decide to create little surprises for each other, to keep their relationship fresh and fun. But in their pursuit of Project Surprise Me - anything from unexpected gifts to restaurant dates to photo shoots - mishaps arise with disastrous and comical results.

Gradually, the surprises turn to shocking discoveries. And when a scandal from the past is uncovered, they begin to wonder if they ever really knew each other after all. . .

Critic reviews

Sophie Kinsella keeps her finger on the cultural pulse, while leaving me giddy with laughter. I loved it.
This is the funniest book Sophie Kinsella has ever written
This is Sophie Kinsella at her heart-warming and hilarious best
In a month when romance takes centre stage, Sophie Kinsella can always be relied upon to deliver a story that will warm the cockles of any tired old heart but never lapses into saccharine sweet sentiment.
Kinsella at her put-a-smile-on-your-face best
I'm a huge fan of Kinsella . . . Highly enjoyable
A hilariously funny, yet emotionally deep, novel
Enchanting and clever . . . whip-smart and brilliantly done, with a lightness of touch that disguises a lot of real wisdom.
Sophie Kinsella writes with a warm wit and this clever, funny and emotional novel will make you laugh and cry. *****
A funny, addictive story that shines with real emotion

This book is surprising - almost a book of two halves. At first I thoroughly enjoyed the story and it moved along at a good pace, then three quarters of the way through it was almost as if there had been a complete change of author and the story became boring. Very disappointing

I spent half of the book getting frustrated, not knowing where it was going. There are aspects of Kinsella’s characters that are just downright silly and that certainly rings true here. However, she’s a clever writer. She brings together all the tiny nuances and little clues that you miss into a satisfying and enjoyable story. She does take the scenic route in getting there but it makes the ending very enjoyable and I’m sad it’s over. Wasn’t a huge fan of the narration, the voices for the children were at times extremely irritating. But a good listen overall.

This book DID Surprise Me.
