About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Skin Deep by Liz Nugent.

Cordelia Russell has been living on the Côte d'Azur for 10 years, posing as an English heiress. Now her money is gone, and her luck is running out. Desperate to escape her grotty flat and grim reality, Cordelia spends a decadent night at the Negresco. But surrounded by the young, beautiful and privileged, she feels her age and her poverty.

As dawn breaks, she stumbles home through the backstreets. Even before she opens her door, she can hear the flies buzzing. It hasn't taken long for the corpse in her bedroom to commence decomposing....

Liz Nugent's novel is the dark, twisted and shocking story of what takes Cordelia from an island childhood in Ireland to ruin in Nice.

I was put off this book due to the title and cover photo, however seeing that it was written by Luz Nugent I thought I would give it a go as I had greatly enjoyed her book Lying in wait.

This genre of crime, thriller and suspense used to be one of my favorites until a few years ago, now I find it filled with books of ridiculous plot lines, alcoholic female characters or just shock value writing with no substance.

Here Liz Nugent has written a powerful book. He female lead Delia is rather unpleasant but she is a victim of circumstance from her unusual childhood on a small Irish island.
That said Delia could have had an epiphany moment and seen the error of her ways but that would not have make such a good book.

The story takes you in on a ride after the epilogue, and its umput down able there on in.

Delia's life is unraveled over most of the chapters and this would be a great book on its own. Just near the point when you think I wonder where this is going now it all starts to twist and turn and you follow the rollercoaster ride to the end.

Thoroughly recommend and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Beauty is skin deep, ugly goes much deeper.

I didn’t think I would enjoy a book with a main character I wouldn’t like, however I did enjoy it muchly. The narration was excellent and the story held my interest throughout.
