To hate and to scold....

Derek Chambers, Marquess of Whitlock, has a problem: his wife. She is the single most horrifying aspect of his life, and the only thing he has ever enjoyed about her are their truly spectacular fights. As such, he prefers having as little to do with her as possible. So when she unexpectedly summons him to London, he surprises himself by going, and finds his life turned upside down in ways he never thought possible.

To loathe and to perish....

Katherine despises her worthless and irritating husband, and nothing bothers her more than the fact that he actually came to London when she sent for him. Worst of all, now that he has come, she needs him to stay. With her. And with his every smile making her heart race, she begins to wonder if there could be more to him than meets the eye.

The story starts out well. But soon the characters are doing the same thing over and over. The fire of one character dies to a damp squib. No personality is left after this. The second character is just not working as well as I think the author intended. I believe this may be because of the way the narrator voices the character. The narrator is good but it’s just the range of this character.
Stock phrases make it feel repetitive so that it just becomes increasingly boring. “Leaning into his kiss” occurs too many times.
I’ve rated as a 3 because the narrator is good and the story isn’t that bad but the repetition and lack of character mean it’s not a great story.

Monotonous & repetitive

The characters are all rather silly and immature. If this is supposed to be funny, it falls flat.

Juvenile

Engaging story with good narration. Bit slow in places. Annoying impossibility in threat by Duke to disinherit his eldest son - not legally possible and not the choice of the existing Duke, who had power over his unentailed estate, but not his title (primogeniture- always went to oldest living son) or his entailed estate (went with the title). These extremely basic facts of inheritance law can’t be ignored if a regency romance is to be credible. A minor mention in this instance, rather than a plot driver, hence merely annoying, but why is the author not aware?
