Eleven-year-old Slim Hannigan and her family left their home in Ireland to travel to America - in search of a better life. Really enjoyed the Storey with a bit of everything thrown in, historical facts, geographic facts and a bit of mate believe. The reader‘s accent was really good. I hope there’s a sequel so I can finally get to find what happened to the Hannigan family in Oregon.

A fine continuation of the story started in 'A Slice of the Moon', I am so drawn in to the story and have grown to be friends with this lovely Irish family. I really do find their troubles to be harrowing and I have found occasions when I have to push myself into continuing to read.
Sandi Toksvig has an amazing way of presenting a story, she has obviously researched this topic thoroughly, i.e. The Potato blight and the plight of the poor Irish workers.

I love ST’s story telling its feast for the ears. A bit far fetched in places but really life like in others. Can’t wait for the next storybook.

While I enjoyed the story as a follow on from the previous book, A Slice of the Moon, I was frustrated that the narrator for this book did not do her research as to how Lisa Dwan narrated the the last book. One of the characters went from being a Liverpudlian to being given an Irish accent and the Hannigan family went from being from rural Ireland to sounding as though they were from Dublin. And it seemed that every American character that was introduced in the story, had a southern accent. That said Sandi Toksvig did a great job taking us on the journey with the family and all they encountered as they traversed the east coast to the West Coast of America. I do hope we find out, at some point, how the Hannigan family get along in Oregon.
