About this listen

Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones) reads chilling tales by the unsung master of the classic ghost story: E. F. Benson.

There's nothing sinister about a London bus. Nothing supernatural could occur on a busy train platform. There's nothing terrifying about a little caterpillar. And a telephone, what could be scary about that?

Don't be frightened of the dark corners of your room. Don't be alarmed by a sudden inexplicable chill. There's no need for a ticking clock, a limping footstep, or a knock at the door to start you trembling. There's nothing to be scared of. Nothing at all.

Really enjoyed this audio book. Absolutely adore anything involving Mark Gatiss and his narration is superb. I was actually disappointed when it finished as I was gripped and ready for the next story. I'm new to E.F. Benson but I will be looking out for more by this author. Very well written short stories that keep you interested.
Would highly recommend!

I like Bensons work but there is no comparisons of M.R.James for both are on different wavelengths & James is far superior. Gatiss spoilt this collection with his bland characterless performances about as scary as the magic rounderbout, no fear at all. When I read Bensons work I create fear & there is lots of tension, speculation & expectation & thoroughly enjoy his work. But this performance left me so disappointed and bored.

Gattiss is Bland & Unconvincing

Great collection, well performed.
Several I had read before in different collections over the years.
Very much of their time, but charming and gripping.

Excellent short stories, similar to M R James.

These are wonderful, old-fashioned spooky stories, but in Mark Gatiss’ hands, they become all the more creepy and spine-tingling! His reading is mesmerising!

Mark Gatiss makes these stories chilling!

Wonderfully creepy, very English stories, read mellifluously and with elegance by an incomparable narrator. Highly recommended.

Phenomenal
