Why do some people achieve extraordinary results while others, who are just as talented, fall short?

In her acclaimed, multi-million-copy bestseller, Grit, award-winning psychologist Angela Duckworth takes us on an eye-opening journey to discover the true qualities that lead to success.

Using case studies from her own childhood upbringing to her extensive research studying the psychology of success in sports and business, Duckworth reveals that talent is not what makes humans more likely to succeed. Instead, it’s a powerful combination of passion and perseverance – what she calls ‘grit’.

Drawing on cutting-edge research and real-world stories, Grit reveals:

  • What ‘grit’ is and why it matters
  • How grit can be learned, regardless of IQ or circumstances
  • Why stubbornness is a key characteristic of gritty people
  • How to develop lifelong purpose and passion
  • And so much more

Personal, powerful, and empowering, Grit is the inspiring and practical guide that will show you how to develop the resilience, focus and determination needed to succeed.

Critic reviews

GRIT is a persuasive and fascinating response to the cult of IQ fundamentalism. Duckworth reminds us that it is character and perseverance that set the successful apart.
Impressively fresh and original … GRIT scrubs away preconceptions about how far our potential can take us. And it solves the riddle of how those not likely to succeed in fact do. Buy this, send copies to your friends, and tell the world that there is, in fact, hope. We can all dazzle.

At a time when our collective notion of success has shrunk to the point of being unrecognizable, Angela Duckworth arrives to restore it. With a mix of masterful storytelling and the latest science, she shows that perseverance and passion matter at least as much as talent and intelligence. And far from simply urging us to work harder for the sake of working harder, Grit offers a truly sane perspective: that true success comes when we devote ourselves to endeavors that give us joy and purpose.

This book will change your life. Fascinating, rigorous, and practical, Grit is destined to be a classic in the literature of success.

Angela Duckworth has written a contemporary classic - a clarifying and deeply-researched book in the tradition of Stephen Covey and Carol Dweck. For anyone hoping to work smarter or live better, GRIT is an essential - and perhaps life-changing - read.

Utterly captivating, inspiring and original. For those of us who are not blessed with the easy confidence that comes from being a 'natural', Duckworth offers the science showing how staying committed to a task will eventually persuade others we were born to it. Once you pick up GRIT, you won't be able to tear yourself away.
I kept wanting to read this book aloud - to my child, my husband, to everyone I care about. There are no shortcuts to greatness, it's true. But there is a roadmap, and you are holding it.

This book confounded my expectations. I didn't expect to hear so much about joy and passion. I didn't expect to see so much of myself when the author describes the pitfalls of those who don't develop enough grit at a young age. I did expect to feel a little downhearted at the end; as someone not greatly gritty I worried this would be a terrible few hours of self flagellation.

In the end I felt inspired. This book will help me to better myself and to be better at my job and as an uncle and future father.

Essential for parents, teachers, leaders and anyone who wants to understand achievement

This book is well written with refreshingly new ideas. It is devoid of the cliches of this genre. It provides reasoned and often evidenced based arguments for what it professes. There are few who would not both enjoy and benefit from this book.

Exceptional book - highly recommend

I've spent the past few years of my life struggling to develop a skill which I see as being instrumental to my future prospects. Whilst I'd say I worked hard before I can now say that I work with grit and have already started to see a difference in my progress. Thank you Angela.

Great insight. Great idea.
