George Dixon became one of the best-known and most-loved fictional policemen during the course of three decades of BBC TV's Dixon of Dock Green, in which he was played by Jack Warner. In these 12 radio adaptations, he once again upholds the law on the streets of 1950s Dock Green.

This made TV common culture for everyone even more than the "pictures" (cinema) had been in the '40s.
It is astonishing now to be reminded that police investigated rather petty crimes, blew whistles to summon backup, had to use telephone boxes, that rent for a house might be £2 a month, that anyone could be bothered counterfeiting florin -two shilling (10p) and half-crown (12.5p) coins and 10 bob (shilling) notes (50p!)
A bank safe could hold the fabulous fortune of £10,000, there was National Service, from which one might desert, scampi and chips could constitute an extravagant meal out, a "wild" dance hall might not serve alcohol and frothy coffee (in transparent cups, though that is not mentioned) is daring!
Dixon, was part of Saturday, as later, Doctor Who and Juke Box Jury.
Perhaps the adults, who'd lived through at least one war, enjoyed stories in which crimes are fairly low-key, are always solved, justice is always done, youngsters are sometimes diverted from a criminal career.
Who could blame them!
The books I listened to immediately before were about the Nuremberg trials, Eichmann's trial, and the civil libel case brought by Holocaust denier David Irving vs Penguin Books & Deborah Lipstadt.
I deserved a respite, reminder of the innocent times between the war and the Bay of Pigs, Cuba, and fear.

Anyone who knows Dixon of Dock Green knows Andy was typically a Londoner, not a hint of a Scottish accent. Fo this reason, I do not award five stars as, for me, this spoilt it a little.
