About this listen

H. G. Wells' classic science fiction work, first serialized in 1897, is one of many invasion narratives prevalent in British literature towards the end of the 19th century. However, The War of the Worlds not only introduces the extraterrestrial element of brutal Martian forces on the rampage but also explores many other contemporary issues and themes.

Here then is a powerful first-person narrative that grapples with Martians, tripods, heat rays, the behaviour of crowds, love, human resilience and Woking.

There are a number of audio versions of this classic sci-fi available on Audible. For me, it was important to choose one read by a sufficiently engaging and not too hammy reader. And this is the one.

A dark evergreen, and the perfect narrator.

War of the Worlds is my favourite novel, but this is an odd audiobook. It's delivered as though it's being read by a text-to-speech program. The narration is flat with no feeling, which is worst in the moments where you're supposed to feel the Journalist's despair and panic. His accent is perfect for the story, but his delivery is monotonous.

Classic story, odd delivery
