About this listen

In celebration of it's 20th anniversary, Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable, audiobook edition of High Fidelity, by Nick Hornby, read by Russell Tovey.

Nick Hornby's first novel, an international bestseller and instantly recognized by critics and readers alike as a classic, helps to explain men to women, and men to men. Rob is good on music: he owns a small record shop and has strong views on what's decent and what isn't. But he's much less good on relationships. In fact, he's not at all sure that he wants to commit himself to anyone. So it's hardly surprising that his girlfriend decides that enough is enough.

Critic reviews

Leaves you believing not only in the redemptive power of music but above all the redemptive power of love
A triumphant first novel. True to life and moving
Extremely cleverly observed
An instant classic
Fast, fun, and remarkably deft: a sharp-edged portrait that manages at once to be vicious, generous, and utterly good-natured

A great listen, well read, main character was so frustrating but so believable too. Easy listening, a trip down memory lane back to the 70’s.
Would recommend.

top 5 laugh oh loud Audio books

Along with Fever Pitch and About a Boy. High Fidelity forms a trilogy of late 20th century masculinity or lack of same. A must for every man, to laugh and cry at himself, and for every woman, so as to run away as fast as possible... or get one as a pet.

I really enjoyed this book and Russel Tovey’s narration, he gave Rob character and personality. One thing I particularly appreciated was the alternative look at adult relationships. Both Rob and Laura could be accused of ‘settling’ in the end, however I feel that that’s how life and relationships get when all the excitement and butterflies have gone. I liked that the ending wasn’t this big, fake romantic rekindling but rather an imperfect reunion full of hope and doubt and and agreement to work on things. I enjoyed all the characters and rob was definitely relatable!

A different way to look at love

Have read this book years before but listening to it was even better. Russell Tovey is an excellent narrator and I was sad when it ended. A real true to life story that many people will relate to.

Smiled and grimaced all the way through!
