Brian Staveley's The Providence of Fire, the second novel in the Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne, a gripping new epic fantasy series in the tradition of Brandon Sanderson and George R. R. Martin.

The conspiracy to destroy the ruling family of the Annurian Empire is far from over.

Having learned the identity of her father's assassin, Adare flees the Dawn Palace in search of allies to challenge the coup against her family. Few trust her, but when she is believed to be touched by Intarra, patron goddess of the empire, the people rally to help her retake the capital city. As armies prepare to clash, the threat of invasion from barbarian hordes compels the rival forces to unite against their common enemy.

Unknown to Adare, her brother Valyn, renegade member of the empire's most elite fighting force, has allied with the invading nomads. The terrible choices each of them has made may make war between them inevitable.

Between Valyn and Adare is their brother Kaden, rightful heir to the Unhewn Throne, who has infiltrated the Annurian capital with the help of two strange companions. The knowledge they possess of the secret history that shapes these events could save Annur or destroy it.

Read from January 14 to 19, 2015

I always worry when reading the second book in a trilogy, it must be the hardest to write as the author cannot give too much away to ruin the final book but also keep it entertaining enough for the reader to want to read the final book. I imagine a high percentage of readers will always feel the second book is not as good as the first & at this point will not even finish the series which sometimes is a sacrifice that needs to be made if like me, you read a lot of fantasy books that are part of trilogies or series. Therefore I was quite nervous for Mr Staveley, no pressure Emperors Blades was my favourite book of 2014 & for it to be released in January & still stick in my mind said a lot about the adventure Staveley took me on.

So to Providence of Fire, my physical signed copy has still not arrived so I listened to the audio book (which I have to say is greatly read, Piers voice is brilliant.) I tend to find audio books a bit harder to take in, but there was no need to head back to Emperors as in every good follow up the previous just comes flooding back. Staveleys characters are really unique & very stubborn. Valyn who wants to resolve everything by war, Kaden who is more methodical & feels he can unite to all stand as one & destroy his unhewn throne & Adare the sister, feels its best to stick with the traitors to win, who in turn is a total bitch. Apart from the main characters there are plenty of others who bring so much to the table, as mentioned earlier Piers, the very chilled out assassin who does bring some humour to the book, especially if you listen to the audio.

After I finished PoF I also found it a really good idea to listen/ or read the characters storylines individually, in fact I enjoyed this more a si got to know that particular character really well (this is something I tend to do in Thrones when you have to wait a long time for certain characters chapters.) & it helps to individually appreciate the POVs in the book much more. Well done to Mr Staveley, really entertaining reading, cannot wait for book 3. Just one criticism lets have some of those awesome Kettral Birds.

What other book might you compare The Providence of Fire to, and why?

Holy Hull

Brilliant high fantasy, an exciting plot woven together from three main character's experiences. For people who love George rr Martin.

Excellent Fantasy

As a sequel, this book was good but not as good as the first, only because I did not like the ending, the cliffhanger, so much!! But the brilliance and uniqueness of the author shown through as conquests, plots and characters were made more complex and unsuspecting!! I'm left reeling with both more anxiety and questions and hope I do not have to wait too long for the 3rd book in the series!!

Engaging and Addictive

If you enjoyed the first novel of this series, then this one is just as enjoyable, with as many mysteries and great characters.

Just as good as the first book
