About this listen

'An unputdownable thriller about corrupt power and sex' Sunday Telegraph

'Guaranteed to keep you awake' The Times

A body washes up on the deserted coastline of America's most exclusive holiday retreat. But it's no open-and-shut case of suicide. The death of Robert McAra is just the first piece of the jigsaw in an extraordinary plot that will shake the very foundations of international security.

For McAra was a man who knew too much. As ghostwriter to one of the most controversial men on the planet - Britain's former prime minister, holed up in a remote ocean-front house to finish his memoirs - he stumbled across secrets which cost him his life.

When a new ghostwriter is sent out to rescue the project it could be the opportunity of a lifetime. Or the start of a deadly assignment propelled by deception and intrigue - from which there will be no escape . . .

'Brilliantly persuasive, right up to the last page of its astonishing and unpredictable conclusion' Economist

'Truly thrilling' Sunday Times

Excellent writing and plot as usual with Robert Harris, complemented by a masterful performance from Michael Jayston.

Enthralling.

For starters, I love the film. I thought it was time try out the source material, and I was not disappointed. Having previously read some negative comments i was put off, but I've not got anything at all negative to say about this book. The book and film differ and mirror in perfection in my opinion, giving just enough variation to enjoy both. Michael Jayston is perfect, like every other narration he's done (oh please do Archangel and i might buy it).

Brilliant. One of the best books I've ever read.

A magnetic performance by Michael Jayston and some razor sharp prose lead the book to almost read itself, despite a limited plot in which surprisingly little happens.

Lukewarm but enjoyable thriller

I enjoyed this from start to finish - plot well constructed with enough pace to keep me interested. I like stories with political messages and this seemed to fit the bill in that respect.

interesting story, parallels to real events 1990s+

A good book - I like the political theme. It’s got some twists and turns that keep you thinking.

Good! A decent twist or two!
