About this listen

Die Novelle, in deren Zentrum der fiktive Deichgraf Hauke Haien steht, basiert auf einer Sage, mit der Storm sich über Jahrzehnte befasste. Mit der Niederschrift der Novelle begann er jedoch erst im Juli 1886 und beendete seine Arbeit daran im Februar 1888, wenige Monate vor seinem Tod.

There are at least two readings of this classic of North German literature here on audible, the other one I have is the Sven Goetz reading which is part of Der Grosse Klassiker Box.

That reading is considerably slower than this and without the local accent embellishments of this reader. I think the best way of approaching the study of this using Audible is to listen to the Goetz reading first, if need be with a translation open. I'm not delighted with the Kindle versions of this either in German or English, but they will serve. Then afterwards go over it again with this reading. I think that is the best strategy to get the most for the learner of German as well as those seeking to appreciate the book for its own sake.

This review is for English learners of German.
