The cathedral town of Lafferton seems idyllic, but in many ways it is just like any other place. As part of the same rapidly changing world, it shares the same hopes and fears, and the same kinds of crime, as any number of towns up and down the land.

When one day DC Simon Serrailler is called in by Lafferton's new Chief Constable, Kieron Bright, he is met by four plainclothes officers. He is asked to take the lead role in a complex, potentially dangerous undercover operation and must leave town immediately, without telling anyone - not even his girlfriend Rachel, who has only just moved in with him.

Meanwhile, Simon's sister Cat is facing difficult choices at work that will test her dedication to the NHS. But an urgent call about her and Simon's father, Richard, soon presents her with a far greater challenge much closer to home.To complete his special op, Simon must inhabit the mind of the worst kind of criminal. As the op unfolds, Lafferton is dragged into the sort of case every town dreads. And Simon faces the fight of his life.

Steven Pacey is my favourite narrator and Susan Hill's sequence of detective novels my favourite - and they keep getting better. This one deals with even more complicated issues than the previous one, never in a lecturing or annoying way, but perfectly judged. I can't bear the gaps between these novels...

Brilliant, better than ever!

I had a listening fest over the December/early January period and listened to all 8 of the Simon Serralier series. I think this was the best way to listen to these engaging books even if it drove my husband nuts. I really enjoyed these books - both the plots and the family stories that run alongside. Very listenable.

i am reviewing books 1-8 in this series

Having really enjoyed previous Simon Serailler books, I started this as it was the next available book included in the Plus Catalogue. Not a subject I would have chosen to listen to a story about, and had I known how disturbing and gory it would be I wouldn’t have started it - I skipped some bits because it was so horrific. Also I prefer if any violence is implied rather than being given all the bloody details. I do get a bit annoyed at the non-ending endings. I know you want us to buy the next book, but it would be nice to have a proper ending. Despite all the negatives there were some good parts, and Susan Hill writes well.

The subject and violence were all too much for me

Keenly observed emotionally but not too realistic as a plot. The Caribbean accent by the narrator was terrible in my opinion. I’ve listened to them all and the characters are strong , I feel invested in them, look forward to the next one.

Not my favourite but still very good

What did you like most about The Soul of Discretion?

The continuing development of the main characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Cath Deerborn, she's a sympathetic character and the only really warm member of her family.

Have you listened to any of Steven Pacey’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Very much as expected a great reading of the story without too many silly voices.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The naked child at the very beginning.

Any additional comments?

A very dark book with lots to think about.

grim stuff
