About this listen

Penguin Audiobooks presents Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan. An unabridged recording voiced by MacLeod Andrews and Nick Podehl.

One cold night, in a most unlikely corner of Chicago, teenager Will Grayson crosses paths with . . . Will Grayson! Two teens with the same name who run in two very different circles suddenly find their lives going in new and unexpected directions.

Culminating in epic turns-of-heart on both of their parts, they team up to produce the most fabulous musical ever to grace the high-school stage. Told in alternating voices from two award-winning, popular names in young-adult fiction - John Green (author of The Fault in Our Stars) and David Levithan (author of Boy Meets Boy) - this unique collaborative novel features a double helping of the heart and humour that has won both authors legions of fans.

** John Green has a huge online presence through his 1.1 million Twitter followers and YouTube channel Vlogbrothers, which has been viewed over 200 million times and has 660,000 subscribers, making it one of the most successful online channels in history.

Narration excellent by both narrators, although obviously Nick Podehl had the harder job of trying to make the listener actually like OWG...the other Will Grayson. The Will Grayson who suffered from depression, but who was full of angst, foul mouthed and rude, ranting against everyone and everything else in the world....and come on, I know teenagers can be challenging but blimey!! I'm also assuming that angsty OWG was written by David Levithan....I do have a couple of his reads lined up, Boy Meets Boy and Two Boys Kissing, but to be honest, I may wait a while before getting stuck in to either of those other books.

Given what I've said above, it's pretty easy to assume that Will Grayson, Jane and Tiny Cooper came from the imagination of John Green. Will and Jane seemed like perfectly normal teenagers....if such 'beings' can ever be described as normal. ;) Tiny was just in a class of his own entirely...I loved him to bits, and Macleod Andrews [whom I'll definitely be listening to more of] did a wonderful job of getting the listener to really interact and bond with these three in particular, but especially Tiny. I got a good Will Grayson and bad Will Grayson vibe throughout the whole story, but really they were just two totally different young people who happened to live in the same city and have the same name.

If I let my imagination to run riot into the future, I'd hope that angsty WG stayed with cool, calm and collected Gideon, the flamboyant WG who turned up to Tiny's musical got together with Tiny and OWG [original Will Grayson] stayed with Jane and everyone lived happily ever after....but probably not, sighs. 4 stars from me.

Tiny Cooper, you are utterly fabulous!!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Not exactly. It was a well written story but maybe not for me.

What did you like best about this story?

The narration was excellent by both readers

Have you listened to any of MacLeod Andrews and Nick Podehl ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No

Did Will Grayson, Will Grayson inspire you to do anything?

Not really

Any additional comments?

I think I would have given this book 5 stars had a read it 10 or 15 years ago but now I'm a bit older (31) I felt it was just too young for me. To be more precise the characters are teenagers and view the world from this perspective which I found a little immature and annoying at times. Don't get me wrong I love a bit of Glee I just think I personally have grown out of high school musical-type narratives.

Excellent book but perhaps for a younger audience
