I enjoyed the author's book Last Ten Seconds so knew his style would probably be a pacy thriller that takes the listener on a roller-coaster experience. However after a gripping start and intriguing early chapters the present story descends into just too many situations of jeopardy, bodies piling up and lonely parts of the Highlands of Scotland apparently inhabited by Russian gangsters, paedophiles, corrupt policemen, hit men and gun-totting grannies. There's little in the way of character-development and no respite from action. I think the story needed a few quiet interludes to slacken the relentless pace. It's all a bit too macho for my taste, though the narrator does a great job and must have been exhausted by the end!

Overly frenetic thriller

Ever feel that when it rains it pours? I do like Simon Kernick, but some times he makes it so hard for the reader to fall into his world.

A little spoiler alert here.

Imagine having a rubbish life. Your parents are dead and you've been stuck in abusing foster care since you can remember. Then, finally, you are placed with new "parents" who actually seem very nice. You think everything is fine until, one day, you're out on a pleasant family trip when suddenly your new guardians get killed too. Terrific.

Then you find yourself chased by a Russian mafia boss's hench men. Great.

Then you're chase and attacked by dogs. Wow.

Then when you think you're finally safe, you find yourself locked in a room alone with an aged, perverted old man. Really?

Then to top it all you're almost strangled to death by someone you trust. Come on...

You're then taken to yet another predators house...I'd give up.

All this and you're just two sisters trying to get on in life.

Even though they seem to consistently jump out of the fire into the frying pan, then another frying pan, then another frying pan etc, and I did find myself shaking my head in disbelief, I did actually enjoy the story. I have certainly heard worse. I've also heard better.

They're not having much luck....
