About this listen

The Maude is outside. It wants to come in.

It wants to sit on your chest.

The mentally ill patients in Beechway High Secure Unit are highly suggestible. A hallucination can spread like a virus. When unexplained power cuts lead to a series of horrifying incidents, fear spreads from the inmates to the staff. Amidst the growing hysteria, AJ, a senior psychiatric nurse, is desperate to protect his charges.

Detective Inspector Jack Caffery is looking for the corpse of a missing woman. He knows all too well how it feels to fail to find a loved one’s body. When AJ seeks Caffery’s help in investigating the trouble at Beechway, each man must face a bitter truth in his own life. Before staring pure evil in the eye.

Really enjoyed this. I had started reading it on kindle but opted for audio book because I can listen while doing other things so I had already given the characters voices so hearing someone else reading them took a bit of getting used to. My first Mo Hayder and it certainly won't be my last. I planned on listening to 10-20 minutes here and there and making it last but I had it on at every opportunity and finished it much much faster than planned! Highly recommend.

Engrossing

Read the reviews before I bought this it was said to be real scary, wasn't scary at all just your usual psychological thriller. Two stories going on at the same time, the Poppet story and a missing woman who has nothing to do with the poppet thing, which I think spoiled the story. I had guessed what was going on well before the end. It was well read but the story didn't give me that scary nail biting edge I had expected. Not a bad book though for all that.
