About this listen

Penguin Classics presents Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, adapted for audio and available as a digital download as part of the Penguin English Library series. Read by Joanna David.

'No sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she had hardly a good feature in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes ... '

When Elizabeth Bennet first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited; he is indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, Jane Austen shows the folly of judging by first impressions and superbly evokes the friendships, gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life.

Part of a series of vintage recordings taken from the Penguin Archives. Affordable, collectable, quality productions - perfect for on-the-go listening.

I had this version on audio cassette in the late 1990’s, and I probably wore it out. Joanna David is so perfect for P&P, her tone & flow are just wonderful... And her treatment of the male voices is so subtle it is a rare treat. Helps too that she was in the 95’ version. It is slightly abridged but it zips through!
I do like the Lindsey Duncan version too, but this will always be the best.

The best narration, hands-down

Narrator is perfect, story is sublime, the best reading of p&p that there is.

Mostly a brilliantly adapted abridgement, the only time I wished for more was during the very important first proposal made by Mr Darcy. Apart from some missing words during his speeches it was an A+ abridgement and the narrator is obviously made to narrate this book, she brings it to life admirably. An addition to my pride and Prejudice collection on Audible that I'm pleased to have added.

Abridged and yet still lovely 🌹
