A truly brilliant novel by Ben Elton. I don't mean to be patronising when I say it but I didn't think Ben had it in hm to write a novel like this one. It is Ben Elton being serious. It describes the horrors of Nazi Germany through the lives of a Jewish couple, their two sons and their two female friends. It brings home the evil of the Nazis on a more personal level. I like the way the story is told in two different time periods in parallel. There are a number of twists relating to the true identity of certain individuals. One individual, in particular, shows her cunning and survival instincts. This is elevated into one of my favourite novels. Highly recommended.

A Truly Brilliant Novel

The story follows 4 young people in Germany at the time that Hitler's Nazi party is beginning its rise to prominence. 2 Jewish brothers, the girl they love and a girl who loves them. It is an interesting premise, and a story that has often been neglected in favour of the concentration camps and the horrors found on the battlefield. The writing is superb and the performance is good. I commend this book to all

Elton at his very best!

What a really clever idea. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and it covered a period which I had no prior knowledge of. Ie 1920’s and 30’s and the rise of the Nazi party.

Ingenious

Ive read several Ben Elton books and loved his humour, passion, thought and research that goes into his books, but this however is so vastly different to anything else he hs written.

I became immersed in this family, constantly "binging" episodes at every chance i got.i was laughing, happy, near to tears, shocked to the core, disgusted, elated, and so sad when the book ended.

This book takes you through so many emotions and youll love it.

So brilliantly narrated by Jot too, his accents were excellent and not over the top, very eloquent and he had the emotions and power just right.

In all a tryly brilliant book and would love to hear Jot so much more
