Really enjoyed the telling of this story - have read all Marjorie Allingham's books previously but often enjoy books being read to me that I already know. Somehow adds an extra dimension. Steady who/how dunnit without too many alarms and excursions - good bedtime listen. Will now seek out some further titles and renew my acquaintance with Mr Campion.

Old fashioned - well maybe

I have loved the Campion books for decades and have read and re read them all time and again. Francis Matthews does the best readings of them...never over the top, characters easily identified and Albert s perfect ......so many readers overplay him.
The books are excellent crime stories, give fascinating insights into the 30s.....and also good psychological insights.
Would strongly recommend listening to them in the right order.

Another wonderful story and reading

Alive with plot twists, excellent character observations and mischief. Only problem is still peppered with racist language. Would really appreciate some light editing.

Classic…

I would love to know how this book was viewed in the 1930s. Was it considered representative of real life? i adore pre-war crime novels, not least for the insights they give into the social attitudes of a bygone era. But this book was so OTT! There is the usual class and racial prejudices. But I couldn't believe my ears when Campion said that his stressed out sister would benefit from being raped! And I had to laugh out loud at the marriage proposal to one character, where the man said she would not only have to give up her career, but would have to put her point of view through feminine wiles, not demands and he would listen to her only if it suited him. Though to be fair, Campion himself favours independent intelligent women. It was interesting to compare the different attitudes to career women. It was clearly a hot topic in the 1930s.

Crazily dated

I love Margery Allingham's Campion stories and this one didn't disappoint. The narration was a bit laboured in parts but Allingham's style is sometimes quite difficult to follow so I think the very deliberate delivery was probably don on purpose to ensure the listener didn't get lost in the more dense passages. I enjoyed it, however, and have listened to it twice now, so would recommend.

A good listen.
