About this listen

If you haven't met a Moomin yet, you're in for the most magical fun! The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Tove Jansson's endearing classic, Comet in Moominland, read with warmth (and some lively character voices) by the comedian Hugh Dennis.A comet is speeding towards Earth and nobody knows what to do! Will it destroy everything and everyone? Moomintroll decides to find out. So, with Sniff, he sets out on an expedition to ask the Professor if a comet is really on its way to destroy the Earth. On their journey they meet some interesting people - such as Snufkin the super tramp, and the Hemulen who rescues them from an underground tunnel - and have narrow escapes from such menaces as crocodiles and giant lizards. And on their way back Moomintroll meets the beautiful Snork Maiden and is a changed Moomin for ever after. But what about the comet - and is the World Wiped Out?

A lovely entertaining story with great characters and beautiful world-building where a charmingly nostalgic meter is paired wonderfully with interesting themes. Story has an impressive amount of depth and sensitivity, not to mention entertainment value. I'm really glad I gave in to the hype.

Give it a go!

I have only recently in adulthood discovered the joy of the Moomin stories, and this is the first, and still a favourite having read a few more. It is a charming world of adventure with really interesting quirky little characters (I love the Hemulen!)

My only complaint if Hugh Dennis's patronising delivery. The books are written for older children and adults, so the delivery as if talking to a 4 year old is unnecessary and inappropriate. I was also irritated that the only way Hugh Dennis could come up with different voices for the characters was to give them a variety of regional accents. Distinctly unimaginative and very disappointing and annoying.

A joyous little story, spoiled by the narrator

I've loved the Moomin books since I was a kid, and I used to have an audiobook version of Hugh Laurie reading Finn Family Moomintroll which I listened to repeatedly because the voices were perfect. I was a bit sceptical about listening to somebody else's interpretation, but Hugh Dennis really brings the characters to life, perfect to listen to with children or when you're just in the mood for a comforting story :)

Lovely reading of a children's classic

A lovely rendering of this beautifully imagined and written first tale set in moominland. Hugh Dennis does full justice to the characters, bringing their strange world and Jansen's gentle philosophies to life

A beautiful book brilliantly read, squeaks and all
