About this listen

The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas.

Published in 1844, it is often considered one of the great thrillers of all time and, along with The Three Musketeers, Dumas' most popular work.

Falsely accused of treason, the young sailor Edmund Dantes is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned in the island fortress of the Chateau d'If. After staging a dramatic escape, he sets out to discover the treasure of Monte Cristo and catch up with his enemies.

Alexandre Dumas (1802 - 1870) was a French writer, best known for his numerous historical novels of high adventure, which have made him one of the most widely read French authors in the world.

Alexander Dumas was a master of his day, this extraordinary well written tome is well worth listening to, however this work was recorded long ago, the narrator who is now long dead speaks in what I am sure would be considered ‘Queen’s English’ as would have been all radio and early television broadcasts at the time of recording.
The sound quality although clearly audible throughout has some background noise, rustle of paper and some distant bumping and banging and the narrator stammers or miss speaks occasionally, somethings I have never heard in recently made audio books, however I thoroughly enjoyed this masterpiece and would recommend it in-spite of the imperfections mentioned.
Don’t let the fact that this masterpiece was first published in August 1844 put you off this amazing story!

A classic work of literature

As much as this is a very long book, you find yourself wanting more and more and not wanting it to end. I will certainly carry in my heart all of the characters good and bad for many years to come.

Incroyable

What a book. Very long but we’ll worth it. A great portrayal of old Parisian society, with murder and revenge throughout. Very well written and a charming performance. I particularly enjoyed the page turning and character of the narrator. Highly recommend.

Fantastic

I loved the narration and the story was enticing, but there's a major issue that made me switch to the other version of this audiobook here in Audible: the inability to go directly to a chapter.

The audiobook's divided into chapters of 2 hours of length, so it is very difficult to skip to or find a specific chapter. This was especially problematic since I'm alternating between this and the Kindle version, so finding where I was left off was impossible and I eventually stopped listening on here and spent a credit on another version of the same book.

Great in every way but a huge flaw!
