Perhaps the greatest poem of the Western world, The Iliad tells the story of 50 critical days towards the end of the Trojan war. Achilles has quarrelled with Agamemnon and sulks in his tent, while Hector brings his Trojans to the brink of victory; but fate will have the last word.Public Domain (P)2006 Naxos AudioBooks Ancient, Classical & Medieval Literature Classics Collections Fantasy Genre Fiction Literary Fiction Fiction Ancient History Ancient Greece Mythology

Anton Lesser brilliantly narrates this foundation story of European civilisation. Ian Johnston’s translation honours the Aegean heroic Bronze Age by bringing it to heartfelt life, presenting it with verve and passion and in the tangible detail we recognise from archaeological finds in Mycenae, Argos and Crete.

Gripping in its wide sweep, its majesty and mourning.

This is the third time I’ve visited this book. I first read this at school, many years ago, as part of a classic civilisations class. Then again, on audible about 10 years ago (Stanley Lombardo narrating-very good).
Every translation I’ve heard leans with a heavy bias (in my opinion) towards the Greeks, which as modern propaganda teaches us, colours the true events in such a way as to question what we read as believable. There is no doubt Troy was sacked, but was it actually ‘a damn close run thing’ ?
We’ll probably never know, but whatever, this is a fantastic book & Anton Lesser performs admirably.
Recommended.

i had tried to listen to other versions of this, many being too mono tone and boring and it had put me off till i started this one and it was brought more to life. it is well read and draws you in to an epic story that at times you just want to keep listening.

the best of the lot
