PULITZER PRIZE WINNER • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This "powerful, mesmerizing story” (People) is an unflinching look into the abyss of slavery, from the acclaimed Nobel Prize winner. With an afterword by the author and a new introduction by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers.

“A masterwork.... Wonderful.... I can’t imagine American literature without it.” —John Leonard, Los Angeles Times

Sethe was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. Sethe has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe’s new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved.

Loved it as expected. Didn't want it to finish. At first struggled with the book but after listening to a couple hours was compelled to use both versions, book and audio. Toni Morrison reading it was a bonus.

I was just supposed to read this for class, but due to corona complications my order wasn't shipped in time. So I came here, got the audiobook.

Turns out that was lucky as hell.

This audiobook was so immersive that I completely forgot it was homework. It was that good. The performance was just perfect, in that special way that maybe only the author can make it, with a beautifully full dulcet voice that gives the words all the weight that can be hard to get across when just read silently. There are lines in this book that I can't imagine my brain doing justice to after having heard them spoken by the author. They gain a whole other impact with her voice, with the way she treats the words, the patience she has with her narration, the way she portrays how the book lingers in spots without ever getting tedious, daring to not rush past. It's a deeply emotional ride from start to finish, but it finds that balance of never overstepping it's welcome, of always diving just deep enough to make you feel the whole picture without needing to spell it out.

The writing itself is brilliant too, and don't even get me started on the plot. I'm not even gonna bother cancelling my paperback order, there's some stuff in here that's damn near poetry. It's got that rhythm and flow that feels almost musical, which I always love to find. The story benefits so much from it, and in the beginning it can always be a bit hard to keep track of who's who for me when I can't just turn the page back and check, but this story unravels with the kind of slow precision that lets you just listen intently and fall into it while the puzzle pieces assemble.

Definitely gonna check out this author again, and definitely going for the audiobook version whenever possible too, I cannot recommend this enough. Not gonna go into historical significance and all that here (or maybe I'll update this after the lecture, who knows), but this book is amazing, and important, and for all the suffering in it it is beyond beautiful. I can't imagine it told better, and if you can, please give me the recommendation. Seriously. It would have to be one hell of a book, because this one sure is.

Best audiobook I've ever listened to.

wonderful, awful, confusing, revealing. terrifying and subtle, angry and healing. Shaming and redemptive. It is simply a story carved from some magical substance.

I've read this and now I've heard it.
