“Hell House is the scariest haunted house novel ever written. It looms over the rest the way the mountains loom over the foothills.” — Stephen King

From the author of I Am Legend comes Hell House, the basis for the supernatural horror film starring Pamela Franklin, Roddy McDowall, Clive Revill.

For over twenty years, Belasco House has stood empty. Regarded as the Mount Everest of haunted houses, its shadowed walls have witnessed scenes of unimaginable horror and depravity. All previous attempts to probe its mysteries have ended in murder, suicide, or insanity. But now, a new investigation has been launched, bringing four strangers to Belasco House in search of the ultimate secrets of life and death. A wealthy publisher, brooding over his impending death, has paid a physicist and two mediums to establish the facts of life after death once and for all. For one night, they will investigate the Belasco House and learn exactly why the townsfolk refer to it as the Hell House.

Hell House, which inspired the 1973 film The Legend of Hell House, is Matheson’s most frightening and shocking book and an acknowledged classic of the genre.

Critic reviews

“Hell House is the scariest haunted house novel ever written. It looms over the rest the way the mountains loom over the foothills.”

(Stephen King, #1 New York Times bestselling author)

“The 1971 novel by Richard Matheson was made into the 1973 film The Legend of Hell House. There are differences in what happens in the book, and the novel does a better job of getting into the heads of the characters and, as a result, the heads of readers.”

There are few spooky moments in this story and the general idea was a good one. I did however find myself getting bored towards the end and I guess that is because it is overlong. It is however worth staying with it until the final scene.

Old fashioned haunted house story

Great narration of a seriously depraved haunted house classic.... a timeless example of excellent horror genre writing.

loved it.

I like Matheson's ways of writing, and Ray Porter is also a very good reader. This book, for me, is not as well written as "I am Legend", but it is exciting and kept my attention right through to the end.

It is perhaps because I have seen the movie (quite a long time ago) and because I am a big fan of Edgar Allan Poe that I bought this with quite a bit of hesitation. However I am glad I did and would recommend it to others.

Good mixture of horror, sci fi and suspense.

Brilliant classic haunting story with shades of The Excorcist. Quite graphic at times so be warned.

loved it but not for the faint of heart.

Despite being written in the 1970’s, Hell House is a well written, atmospheric horror story which rolls along quite well. Just enough hook at the beginning, ramping up the horror elements in the middle, and coming to a decent conclusion. The performance of this book was excellent, with the performer having some truly spine tingling readings of some of the lines that genuinely had me checking over my shoulder!

A good horror story that stands up today
