About this listen

Frederick Jaeger stars in a BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of the legend that has haunted the imagination of millions for over a hundred years!

Summoned to the forbidden heart of the Carpathian mountains, in the depths of Transylvania, Jonathan Harker journeys to Castle Dracula. There he becomes the unwitting prisoner of the mysterious nobleman whom local legend insists is Nosferatu, the vampire…

Phyllis Logan and Bernard Holley are amongst the cast of this radio production, with specially composed music performed by Malcolm McKee.

After listening to three productions of Dracula this week it is surprising how different they are compared with each other. All were enjoyable and each had their faults/ positives; though if you wish to listen to a more faithful telling of Dracula I would suggest the Mark Gatiss version (Big Finish Productions).

Frederick Jaeger as Dracula, BBC Radio 1994 (3hrs 19mins)

Takes a different approach to telling the story - instead of the usual build up to first meeting Dracula the beginning of the story is told with flashbacks from Jonathan Harker’s hospital bed in Budapest.

Overall it is a good production, but both the lead female characters are voiced one-dimensionally. And it seems there were no children at the BBC studio that day as a small boy, Charlie, is unconvincingly voiced by a woman.

The other productions were I listened to were:
Mark Gatiss as Dracula, Big Finish productions 2016 (3hrs 15mins)
David Suchet as Dracula, BBC Radio 2006 (1hr 54mins)

Frederick Jaeger as Dracula, BBC Radio 1994

Really, I was listening to this whilst working and I actually got so spooked that when there was a knock at the workshop door I jumped out of my skin. I thought that there was no way that Dracula story could be made better. I was wrong. I highly recommend this audio recording.

Scary even in the light of day!

Just the right length for someone to enjoy this classic with out going through the whole book.

I disagree with a previous reviewer, that this is the most faithful version to Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
However the quality of this production is outstanding, the cast are brilliant. It is also scary has Vampire horror should be.
Everything is greatly donee. A pleasure to listen to.

Excellent Radio Dramatisation
