About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From Alfred to Zulu, Michael Caine has been Britain's best-loved actor for half a century.

Now, for the first time, he reveals the truth behind his remarkable life. From his time as an evacuee during the Blitz to his front-line military service in the Korean War, from his early days as an assistant stagehand to becoming Peter O'Toole's understudy, from walk-on parts in local theatres to blowing the bloody doors off with his legendary roles in Zulu and The Italian Job, Caine's life was never simple or easy.

Discussing his little-known childhood and family alongside his hard-fought journey from London to Hollywood, Caine writes with astonishing candour about the good years and the lean years, bringing his unique charm and humour to his anecdotes and memories of a sprawling movie-making career. If you worked in Hollywood in the last few decades, you've probably worked with Michael Caine - and his accounts of his relationships with other superstars, both on and offscreen, make this autobiography essential reading for any fan not just of Michael Caine, but of film in general.

Critic reviews

Written with just the right mix of warmth and candour, and in a prose style that is the literary equivalent of his easy-going, up-front persona, this is hugely enjoyable. A super book that informs as much as it entertains
It has taken two decades to get a man back on the Moon, and the man is Michael Caine. Niven's influence as a writer runs rights through it...some genuinely vintage laughs
Caine gives his public value for money, covering his whole life with David Nivenish charm

Michael Caine's self-narrated Auto Biography makes all the difference to this audible book.

Highly recommend it. Unbelievable how down to earth this immensely successful A-Lister was and still is.

My wife and I listened to this from start to finish within a 280mile round trip in the car.

We hope there's another self-nareated Michael Caine auto-biography.

Eye opening insight to Mr. Caine's poor backgroun.

Caine reveals how hard a start he had in life and acting, how the politics of the 1970's diminished the uk.
Caine's use of language is more profound than you might imagine. His delivery of his own work is level and contemplative.

One of the best biography’s. Please bring a second continuation. Loved it Michael, from a man in Bermondsey.

Brilliant. What a biography….

Micheal Caine gives an interesting and touching review of his life up until his 58th year. When I bought this audio book I did 't realise it was abridged so it only lasts just over two hours which was a disappointment but it was an entertaining two hours.

Good but short!

I read this book years ago, and wanted to do so again, but there's so much missing. Various things that I remember from the first read are just not here. Excellently read by the author though, just not enough.
