Summary

Sephy is a Cross, a member of the dark-skinned ruling class. Callum is a Nought, a 'colourless' member of the underclass who were once slaves to the Crosses. The two have been friends since early childhood. But that's as far as it can go. Until the first steps are taken towards more social equality and a limited number of Noughts are allowed into Crosses schools.

Against a background of prejudice and distrust, intensely highlighted by violent terrorist activity by Noughts unable to accept the injustices any longer, a romance builds between Sephy and Callum; a romance that is to lead both of them into terrible danger.

Critic reviews

"An author who has worked hard not to be identified too closely with any particular genre, she has built a complex and challenging novel around an alternative version of apartheid." ( The Scotsman)

Great Read

This was a good book that was excellently transposed to an audio book by using 2 readers. Highly recommended for teenagers and adults alike.

Awesome

Never before has a book made such a powerful impression on me. This book is literally without fault and should be made compulsary reading for absolutely everyone. The ending is so moving that I cried out load and no book has ever done that to me before. Seriously it is that good, I defy anyone not to be moved by this awesome masterpiece.

Absolutely amazing

I thought the plot was so well thought through and the performance clearly depicted the characters characteristics. I would absolutely recommend

Pointless

I don’t understand why someone would write a novel like this. The noughts and crosses could just as well have been purple and green. I don’t see the point of reversing the destiny of black and white people. Making black people the dominant class doesn’t change reality. Is this book supposed to make black people and people of colour feel better that for once the shoe is on the other foot? This is certainly not a book I would recommend.

Brilliant story

Thought provoking, at times shocking but beautifully written young persons novel, can equally be enjoyed by all age groups.
