Summary

This is the book that first introduces the serial killer, Hannibal Lecter.

Sexual hunger; demonic violence; sinister logic; the lethal components of a deadly formula driving a psychopath in the grip of an unimaginable delusion; a boastful killer who sends the police tormenting notes; a tortured, torturing monster who finds ultimate pleasure in viciously murdering happy families, and calls himself The Red Dragon.

Special agent Will Graham had been assigned to similar cases before, cases where he was able to see and feel with the madmen, anticipate their moves and, most terrifying of all, be vulnerable to their horrifying brutality. Now Graham is reluctantly lured out of retirement, to find an opening to the evil mind of the Red Dragon.

Harris brings this story to life in his own voice.

It's odd to prefer an abridged version of a story you love and know well, but in this case, this is true for me for Thomas Harris' (abridged) Red Dragon. Harris does such a wonderful job of narrating his own characters, perfect pacing and such a wonderful voice to hear, compelling and with good range. Harris clearly has a relationship with these characters like no one else and it adds to the quality and depth of the experience imo.

Red Dragon

a nice short introduction into the deliciously murderous Hannibal Lector. It serves as a good pre-amble to the silence of the lambs and the story did engage me. I did however, find Thomas Harris's drawling accent very distracting and at times found it difficult to distinguish between characters.

I loved it

If you could sum up Red Dragon in three words, what would they be?

Intriguing, clever, well written

What other book might you compare Red Dragon to, and why?

It is similar to Jo nesbo books as it is a page turner and keeps you guessing to the very end.

What does Thomas Harris bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The suspense, I was actually scared reading it.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes it made me feel scared

Any additional comments?

It is one of 4 books about Hannibal lector and all are worth reading.
