About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A highly entertaining, clued-up and panoramic guide to cars by Mat Watson, the world’s most followed car journalist on social media

Mat Watson knows everything there is to know about cars.

In his 25-year career as a motor journalist, he has driven and tested every vehicle under the sun, from engineering marvels such as the Bugatti Chiron and Ferrari F40, to the grand-touring stalwarts of highways and motorways the world over – Audis, Volvos, Fords, Fiats, Citroens, Mercedes and Teslas – to absolute crapheaps which should never have made it out of the factory gates. He has crawled into hundreds of boots, peered under thousands of bonnets, kicked tens of thousands of tyres, and has perfected a nose for what makes a beautiful, brilliant and, sometimes truly atrocious, car.

Trusted and loved by his many millions of followers online, Mat’s seal of approval is sought by car manufacturers the world over. His signature unserious yet highly informed style has granted him exclusive access to the biggest launches, the most exclusive cars, and the best in-car snacks.

In Auto Biography, his long-awaited first book, Mat presents his own 100% completely correct and highly opinionated guide to the world of cars. From Aston Martin to Kia, BMW to Porsche, he offers up discerning and pithy takes on all the major car manufacturers, telling stories and sharing insider information that has never before been heard, as well as exploring all manner of hot button topics and debates in the automotive world:

  • What really makes a good car, and what makes a bad one?
  • What is the best gadget he’s ever seen on a car?
  • What’s better, electric or petrol?
  • Which car brand has the best insignia?
  • What’s the best car to buy for your mum?

Im a fan of Matt on his Youtube channel Carwow and when he mentioned that his new book was out I got it right away. And it did not disappoint. A good mix of his knowledge, opinions on cars and his history and experiences as a motoring journalist. His voice over is great so I am glad he narrated this book himself. It's a unique book where by he tells stories on the most iconic car brands in alphabetical order. Recommend to anyone loving cars and enjoying Matt Watson

I really enjoyed this autobiography. If you watch the Carwow channel, you’ll get an extra kick out of it because you’ll recognise so much of Matt’s style and humour. But even if you don’t, it’s still a fun and interesting read. It gives you a cool look at his take on all the different cars he’s driven as a motoring journalist over the years. Overall, it’s just an easy, enjoyable book for anyone who likes cars.

Behind the Cars: Matt’s Story

Quite like Matt Watson on Carwow, so was looking forward to this book coming out. Its quite interesting, but there are many errors that make it seem like little research has been done on the details Matt doesn’t know much about. There are also a few editing errors, which really should have been picked up by whoever checked the final version. A good listen, but far too many times i was saying to myself “that info is not correct”

Interesting but falls short on expectations
