About this listen

Being a bouncer at a heavy metal/goth bar sounds pretty exciting...unless you're one of Odin's Chosen Warriors hiding out from Valhalla and your past. So Magnus a.k.a. Mouse is less than thrilled when Fate drops a supernatural murder at his feet. Is there any way he can stop the killer without tripping over his own secrets? Or will the cops, the feds, or his Valkyrie find him first? And can someone explain how his pet raven is learning to speak Norse?

I took a gamble on this novel as I was searching for something new to try. Have to say, I’m well and truly hooked on the characters and will definitely be reading on.

Great pacing and never a dull moment. Give this a listen if you like your urban fantasy!

Great start to a new universe

I do enjoy when the main character isn't an overpowered know-it-all.
he has some talents with a specific school of magic yet openly admits he's clueless about all other kinds - of which there appear to be many.
He can fight but takes a beating repeatedly, which ties in to his fear of the afterlife.
The inclusion of other cultures (I'm Scottish so it was nice to be represented) is always a hit with me but, as is often the case, the narrator butchered more than a few words and at points it seemed like token attempts.
I'm going to assume the author is American, because there was that thing they seem to obsess over - mens height. The whole thing about anything under 6' being short and worth teasing sounds bizarre to me and wasn't anything I'd heard of outside of American movies/shows. Usually by bratty girls putting someone down when they show interest, so I thought it was made up.
I really hope some things are explained in the next book. Like the weirdly insane levels of attraction, the potentially sentient pets, the deal with the fox..
overall, nicely put together with a flawed and believable main character.
this one was free and the only reason I'm reluctant to pay for the next one is that audible seems to have listed books 3.5 and 4 as the same book and 3.5 to 7 are all unavailable with the generic "there could be loads of reasons for this" message.

lots of potential

I loved the way this story was read the narrators intonation and voice is beautiful to listen to . I enjoyed the story but keep expecting it to build up into something far more than it did . So much do I listened to it twice before submitting a review. It maybe because it’s the first in the series and I need to the heroes progress . I loved the idea of the characters and I expect they will grow .

I have been reading a lot of cheap/free 'no 1 in a series' books recently, so am getting a bit jaded by the plastic characters and plagiarised plots. This was a refreshing change. I will invest in episode 2. Thank you Amazon. Main character is flawed but engaging, The background has ok magic, but some nice additional characters (one he seemed to have killed, but hopefully not) and a plot that is not too obvious. Very good way to fill a long journey. The reader is good for the noir flavour and the main character, but is not a voice actor - you have to work to keep track of who is speaking - and you wouldn't be able to tell a Scottish character from an Irish one if he didn't tell you.

Reminded me of early Dresden - pretty good start.
