Summary

The best way to understand what it was like to fight in the Second World War is to see it through the eyes of the soldiers who fought it. The South Notts Hussars fought at almost every major battle of the Second World War, from the Siege of Tobruk to the Battle of El Alamein and the D-Day landings.

Here, Peter Hart draws on detailed interviews conducted with members of the regiment to provide both a comprehensive account of the conflict and reconstruct its most thrilling moments in the words of the men who experienced it.

This is military history at its best: outlining the path from despair to victory and allowing us to share in soldiers' hopes and fears, the deafening explosions of the shells, the scream of the diving Stukas and the wounded, the pleasures of good comrades and the devastating despair at lost friends.

Brilliant listen

I rarely leave reviews but I was completely absorbed by this gripping account of the south Notts Hussars which was also brought by to life by engaging narration. This reads like the British Band of Brothers. Would highly recommend this audiobook to anyone interested in Military History.

Brilliant book

I love books like this made from reports and interviews with the men that were there. The highs and the horrific lows . I also enjoyed the narration by Roger Davies.

Amazing book on Gunners during WW2

What a mine of information this book truly is! You get a warts and all account from the men that were there! Fantastically written and well read! A must have book I couldn’t stop listening to. I even bought the hard copy.

Great piece of oral history

An enthralling narrative of one of my county's Yeomanry Regiments during the second world war. The book covers the South Notts Hussars from their pre war callup to their demobilization after the war ended. It is both poignant and humorous, based as it is, on the interviews with the veterans which Peter Hart carried out. The narrator did a great job, although I was slightly disappointed that he could not manage the East Midlands accents of the boys from Nottinghamshire! I highly recommend this e-book, and will certainly also buy the book itself when it is released.

Excellent read

Having read many books about WW2 experiences I realised one category was missing - life in the artillery. This is a excellent overview of the structure, roles and techniques used in an artillery regiment, as well as the first hand stories of the men who went through it. Exactly what I was looking for.

Brilliant interview based insight

Loved this! First hand accounts woven in narrative for the whole of the war!

Great insight to the humour and humanity mobilised en masse in 1939!

Audio book perfection.

Perfect for auduo book listening, historically accurate in the timeline ,deeply personal accounts from joyful anecdotes and lifetime friendships, to the unimaginable position of witnessing your best ,stood either side of you torn apart ,while you stand untouched.... All perfectly woven into the big picture and regimental entries.
A great timeline view into the local regiment progression and identity into the total mechanised impersonal total war machine.
Roger Davis again for me ,captures the period language and tone with his immaculate recital.
loved loved loved it.
