I don't give "a tinker's cuss" if the translation is a bit old fashioned it somehow fits in perfectly with this novel by one of the most underrated writers of ALL TIME. The narration too is PERFECT in every way. His voice captures the slyness of Porta for example perfectly and is never over done. A dark dark novel but funny too in places.

The treatment of prisoners in the Garrison Military Prison, during early 1940s Germany; very horrific, also with more than a touch of reality. Another outstanding feature is, as in all of Sven Hassle’s Novels, depicting the harshness of battles and conditions of the Eastern Front. As ever, included is extraordinary humour of Soldiers facing instant death. I have been reading and re-reading Sven Hassle’s wonderful books for over 40 years. There has been a lot of speculation about the Author; lots of hearsay about whether or not these stories are true, or did he serve in the SS? The thing is, to me, It doesn’t matter because the facts are in the numbers of books that have sold since the first publication of Legion of The Dammed. To be honest I don’t care. I love these books, because they are about Soldiers. Being a Veteran myself, I understand the importance of reading them. Nothing to do with National Socialist Germany is glorified in these novels, quite the opposite in fact. These and those of Leo Kessler ( Charles Whiting) have gotten me through some very difficult times. To offset the terrible realities of War, humorous situations are well written and hilariously portrayed throughout as I have already mentioned. Highly Recommended.
