La madre e il padre sono italiani immigrati, ma lui avrebbe preferito essere americano. Poi c'è nonna Toscana, che considera il genero Svevo, padre di Arturo, un fallito, e la figlia Maria una povera pazza perché l'ha sposato. Una famiglia non solo povera: proprio fatta di povertà.
