Story
Isaac Gallant is the heir apparent to the First Admiral. Unwilling to let his mother’s tyranny stand, he joins the rebellion and leads his ships into war against the might of his own nation. Betrayal and failure, however, see Isaac Gallant and his allies captured. Rather than execute her only son, the First Admiral instead decides to exile them, flinging four million dissidents and rebels through a one-shot wormhole to the other end of the galaxy. There, Isaac finds himself forced to keep order and peace as they seek out a new home without becoming the very dictator he fought against.

With new enemies at his heels, he leaps at the chance to join his father's people in the sky city of Newport. Despite his human blood, he finds his place among the aeradi: heir to an ancient noble family. But Erik's enemies will have blood, and the peace between his people and the Draconan dragon riders is like a powder keg. All it would take is one spark.

Elantris was built on magic, and it thrived. But then the magic began to fade, and Elantris began to rot. Now its shattered citizens face domination by a powerful Imperium. Can a young Princess unite the people of Elantris and lead a rebellion against the imperial zealots? Brandon Sanderson's debut fantasy showed his skill as a storyteller and an imaginer of baroque magical systems to be fully developed from the start.

Story
Doctor Benjamin Schröder was far from a man of action. In fact, he was a history teacher - chairman of the Castle Rock University history department - and if his life wasn't perfect, it was close. Until, that is the discussion of his star student Elzbietá Abramowski's dissertation on Operation Oz, the Pacific Allies' invasion of Vladivostok, was brutally interrupted. The psychotic episode that turned his entire world upside down struck with absolutely no warning, and it was more terrifying than anything he should have been able to imagine.

Summary
A Captain shielded by his mother’s rank. An enemy determined to buy freedom with blood. A battle no one expected to fight.
Captain Isaac Gallant is the only son of the dictator of the Confederacy, his career slowed by a dozen measures to protect his reputation and safety alike - but he has no intention of being a pampered child. He is determined to do his duty. An attempt to force his crew to acknowledge their own duties puts his ship in a unique position to intervene when an overwhelming rebel attack is launched on one of the Confederacy’s most critical facilities. The rebels didn’t expect to fight anyone. The Confederacy didn’t expect Isaac Gallant to fight at all. All of them were wrong.

In my Opinion maybe Stewart should find something but space epics it’s a Genre that is already filled with brilliant story tellers.
The Epics of “Honer Harrington” in 10 almost independent books or “Kris Longknive” in I don’t know how many books (around 25) would be a lot use of time and money !

Oddly cadenced speech, similar voices
I am sorry to say I found JD Jackson's voices very similar. There were odd spaces in the sentences. Both of which made listening difficult. for me.
The story was also very flat. I did not get any sense of naturalism. It felt like a newspaper article.

Enjoyable short
Short - less than 2 hour, detailed account of the 1st (major) battle in the dictator's son's lackluster career.
Accounts well for himself considered everyone had beeen sheltering him from any chance of being in a precarious situation.
Done in fine fashion, as al this author's stories are.
This was covered, from what I remember in another book, but this short gives an expanded look into this piece of action & I think will be enjoyed by any fan of rhe series.

A short story that suffers from its lack of details.
This qualifies as a story outline with some outline points having more clearly defined points but generally lacking a coherent storyline. The author didn’t do a bad job but doesn’t give enough to ever convince you to care about the characters, decide who is the good guys vs the bad guys, and clearly hint where the story might go. To that end it is fortunate it was short.

Made it 7 minutes before I ended it.
Glynn Stewart is a very good author. That said, starting a story with a very boring dialog didn’t hook me in (why should I care - that has to be in there pretty close to up front). Narration was okay but the spoken words didn’t match the emotion/tension/dynamic of the written. Words being read.

Listened in between books 2 & 3
36yo male listener, fan of sci-fi and fantasy novels. I listened to this one in between the second and third books, because it was in order of the posted publication date. I felt it was great timing, because I already knew many of the characters and it was interesting to see them in a prior setting.
This short story essentially gives a quick take on a battle before the series. It sets the stage of the main character’s change of heart towards their family, government, and gives the reader a little more perspective on how the characters came to be where they were in the beginning of the series. Short and action packed, I think I actually enjoyed this short story more than the first two books.

Ashen Stars rocks.
G. Stewart's fantastic book Ashen Stars, enhanced by the narration of J. D. J. Jackson is a must listen to for sci-fi fans. The coming to power of a starship captain, fighting against to all odds and coming out victorious while having his belief in his government clouded with doubt is a story worth listening to.
