Summary
As iconic rock guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen enters his mid 50s, well-respected rock journalist Anders Tengner takes a look back at the Swedish rock god’s career and life. Malmsteen’s finesse, speed and style took the music world by storm when he first came to international attention in the early 1980s. His talent and personal life have remained at the center of that storm ever since. As Above, So Below: The Unauthorized Yngwie Biography reveals how Malmsteen became who he is today, for better or worse. His is a story fueled by fury, extreme passion and determination. On the way to achieving his dream, Malmsteen has had to make great sacrifices of both personal comforts and people. The price has been high, for both Yngwie and those closest to him. For this revealing book, Tengner, who has personally known Malmsteen since their teens, conducted in-depth interviews in both the U.S. and Europe with those who were actually present on Malmsteen’s journey. Everyone—from former bandmates, ex-wifes and girlfriends, classmates, managers and more—shares intimate anecdotes, giving the reader a unique and sensitive insight into what makes Yngwie tick. Since Tengner was unencumbered with having to gain Malmsteen’s approval for this book, his unauthorized biography is able to present the truth behind the public persona. Anyone who picks this book isn’t looking to find out about pick slanting or vibrato…you can try the autobiography for that. This is for the “See you in Tokyo, bitch” type fans. There are no interviews with YM bar quotes from other publications, but there are plenty from ex band mates like Joe Lynn Turner and Barry Dunaway, not to mention his ex wives and girlfriends. It’s not a pretty picture, and if like me you always found YM to be a bit ridiculous but harmless, you’re in for a shock.
As far as the audio goes, it’s read by the author, who does a decent job. Keeps a decent pace and tone. This isn’t a fantasy novel so it doesn’t require any thespian capabilities

Solid and sordid

Enjoyed this Audibook. I have read it in the past but listening to it brings more life to the behind the scenes of the life of the mighty Yng.
Unlike Yngwie's own biography that just cherry picks his story's so not to paint him in a bad light this biography really gets in to the nitty gritty with forthright interviews from not just ex band members but from people who knew him on a more personal level
and it doesn't disappoint..

Very revealing biography. Separate the man from the music. Two sides to every story... still an amazing player.

I enjoyed it all!!! Great story. All details. Pleasant or not. Stars aren’t or haven’t been angels…Especially in rock’n roll/ hard rock…

Facts …True. & uneasy truths…
