Unfortunately what could be an exciting subject is made dull by the narrator’s voice. It’s almost like it’s being read by AI.

The book is a useful primer. Much of the examples used are from the USA, and the content is very US-centric, overall.

John Paul Mueller is well-known in the tech space. I have read several of his books. This might be my first time listening to an audiobook by him (together with the co-author Luca Massaron). This is an excellent audiobook with regards to artificial intelligence (AI) but I would not say it is suitable for the absolute beginner. Rather, this audiobook is better suited to someone with some vague familiarity with AI principles and techniques already, as some of the aspects mentioned such as recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are simply not comprehensible to the absolute beginner and won't be through this audiobook. One of the excellent aspects of this audiobook is that it emphasises that AI is NOT what you see in the movies with robots taking over the world - certainly not yet, and unlikely for the foreseeable future. AI is really good at processing large amounts of data, saving time for the programmer. I would venture to say that we use AI not because computers are smart but rather because computers are not smart, and so we have to think of various "tricks" to get them to understand things that we take for granted. It might surprise the person reading this review but even things like "vision", which any child can do, can't really be done by a computer unless they are trained on tremendous amounts of data with very sophisticated techniques behind it (eg feature detection, edge detection, etc). Scientists are still not entirely sure as to how humans see, and there is still a lot of debate in this area. Even for a seasoned professional, there is still value in listening to this audiobook. For example, I never knew that the US Navy funded research into the perceptron, which now forms the basis for artificial neural networks (ANNs). That was something I learned from this audiobook. I do wish a slightly different narrator was used, maybe even a woman, as the narrator used can sound quite dreary if you listen to him over an extensive period of time. One suggestion is Leila Birch, who has an amazing voice; she is the narrator for the audiobook "Black Holes: A Very Short Introduction". As someone from the UK, I also wanted to make a slight correction: the audiobook and physical book mention Tesco's "fidelity" program in relation to the British data science firm Dunnhumby. I am not aware of such a thing. I think what the authors meant was Tesco's Clubcard scheme. That is the actual name, so if a new edition of this book is released they can update it.

Very skewed and in some areas wrong presentation of the topic. While there is some good points, there are bunch of misconceptions provided.
