 Aristoteles ist neben Platon der bedeutendste Denker des Altertums. Seine Philosophie entwickelt im Gegensatz zum "mechanistischen" System des Demokrits eine "teleologische" Ausrichtung. Sein Grundbegriff, die "Entelechie", ist am Organischen und Psychischen gewonnen, die ganze Wirklichkeit soll als etwas Organisches begriffen werden; die organische Natur soll vom Organischen nicht wesenhaft verschieden sein, sondern hier soll das Leben latent existieren.

Wenn auch Aristoteles durch den großen Umfang seines Wissens und den systematischen Charakter seines Philosophierens alle Vorgänger überragt, so stellt er doch im Vergleich mit ihnen in vielen Punkten einen Rückschritt dar.
