When the Colony on Hayden's world went black, a team was sent to investigate. It was supposed to be a training mission: skip in, find out the Casimir Transmitter had gone dead, report back and wait for resupply from the Fleet. We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

In the twentieth century Earth sent probes, transmissions and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy.

Don’t understand the high reviews
- By Chris Bledsoe on 15-01-20
Summary
An elite squadron must go undercover behind enemy lines in this thrilling new space adventure from the author of the Odyssey One series.
Humanity has reached an uneasy truce with the Empire - but unless the allies bring the fight to the enemy, extinction is all but assured. In preparation for the inevitable next war, Commander Stephen Michaels is at the helm of the Archangel Squadron, and his orders are simple: go rogue.
Disguised as mercenaries, Commander Michaels and the Archangels seek valuable intelligence on their imposing foe. Their mission takes them deep into uncharted territory, where they make inroads with the Empire, fiercely guarding their true identities and purpose. Fighting for the enemy goes against everything they stand for, but these are desperate times.
As their deception increases, so does the risk. With the Empire’s deadliest secrets within reach, Commander Michaels and the Archangels accept a mission that will take them even deeper into the Imperial fold. They know all too well that one wrong step won’t just end their lives - it could end their entire civilization.

I miss David DeVries
Overall, A great continuation of the series but spoilt by the new narrator. Stephen Dexter's pronunciation of names etc. and his rather jarring take on the characters accents after several books read by David Devries caused me to nearly give up on several occasions. Please can we have a redo with Mr DeVries at some point or maybe have Mr Dexter listen to a few of the earlier series before he does another.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend!
I really enjoyed this expansion on the Odyssey One series. I look forward to the next book.
Unfortunately a further change in narrator means that existing characters etc now have different accents and pronunciations once again which is frustrating. Do these narrators not listen to the previous books?
other than that, great space battles and intelligence gathering on all sides.

Good Continuation of the Story. Terrible Execution
Unfortunately the new narrator completely detracts from the new chapter.
It's not his voice or cadence...the most concrete thing to which I can point is that character names, places are pronounced completely differently than the prior narrator. Including those that should not have this issue as they are not unique to this book or universe (see Terran).
It's incredibly jarring and leaves you trying to connect dots rather than getting on with the development of the plot.
It's likely no effort was put into prepping the new narrator to step into the role, ensuring some sense of continuity.
I hope Audible can re-issue this installment in a way similar to what was done for book 4 of the Expanse series. Either with the current narrator being given another take with some proper cues or with the prior narrator.

Excellent Story, Bad Narrator
Narrator mispronounces many many words. Voices of good / bad characters do not have similar tonality. Narrator seems very unfamiliar with standard sifi terms. If you can overcome this the story is excellent.

What a disappointment!!
I loved this series! The original narrator David DeVries was great! This guy turn me off to the whole book in an hour, I don’t even want to finish it and I will be asking for my money back because of it. I don’t know why y’all changed but it was a very poor decision. I wish the whole book would be redone by Mr. DeVries so I could once again enjoy Evan’s book but not with this guy, once again Very Very Disappointed!!

Terrible Narration Takes Away from Story
I couldn't finish it.
The inability to pronounce characters name is a HUGE faux pas.
Added to this narrator monotone style of speaking.....I fell a sleep. I am so glad I wasn't driving as I normally do when I am listening to a book.
So, this is a definitely a "no" from the Georgia judge.

It feels more like half of a book.
Overall, it’s a good story and I liked it a lot, but I don’t really know about the last 2hours of the book feels unnecessary. And for me it felt like it ends in the middle of the story, so it feels more like half of a book. I’m really looking forward to the next book of this series and hope I don’t have to wait another year for it.
I had some problems with Stephen Dexter voice in the beginning. He narrated the book in slow-motion at the beginning of the book but got into his voce after a while and I think he pick up the pace after a and got in to the storys characters after an hour.

Story issues, narrator lacking
Was eager to read beyond Odyssey series. Overall, fine story. However, a few inconsistencies. Steph's crew are posing as 'pirates', right? Very 'undercover'. But the repetitious is of Earth, Terran euphemisms is such a giveaway. Potato-potato, etc. Evan Currie has used them excessively since Odyssey book1. But in this undercover environment seems like the pieces could be an identifier.
Also, the narrator was terrible, awful, and just unacceptable. He sounds like he's dead. Every time I started listening again it was surprising to hear his monotone, bland voice.
I would like to see Steph's ego toned down some. He can get annoying.

Not up to par
This should not have been made a book. There is not enough going on in this book to warrant it actually being a book. Also, while the narrator was good, it sure would be nice if this narrator would have listened to previous audiobooks in this series or communicated with the author. It is frustrating when new narrators pronounce character names and places, etc different from previous narrators from earlier books in the series. I do hope this series continues but this audiobook seems rushed to get something out to the public and is lacking in storylines while ensuring a number of holes in the story and background on peoples and specific characters
