About this listen

Several hundred years ago the Comet named Azreal was a sliver distance from colliding with the Earth, causing untold gravitational wreckage, and leaving behind a filament of ethereal energy that drifted upon the planet. Azreal disappeared as its shadow fell over the planet, a spectre gone to the dark before it could utterly destroy all life.

Within a few years a small percentage of humanity started being born with strange powers straight out of a comic book. Metas had arrived. At first humanity shed screams of 'Demons' and a Witch Hunt, historians referred to as the Purge, commenced. Many infants found the flame as their hello into the world.

The Purge lasted almost twenty years until reason prevailed and too many Metas were born to be contained. A few decades later the Long War started.

For over a hundred and forty years, heroes and villains fought all over the world, the Long War. The Vigilant, the coalition of Supers, did their utmost to keep the depredations of the Citadel, the conglomerate of Villains, in check. After endless decades, The Vigilant finally thought they'd won but a decade ago, the heroes fell, betrayed, and utterly crushed by those they tried to save.

This is the story of Arc, the last Vigilant. She has spent a decade running from kill squads doing her best to save any young Metas she finds, to keep them out of the hands of the Citadel, and their torturous training centers.. She meets a strange man who saves her life, an albino the public had been calling, the Ghost. Could he be the one to inspire her to rise up and attempt to finally take the fight to those that took everything she loved?

The world created in this series is fantastic, there are some really interesting concepts that are developed very well over the course of this first book in the series.

The main character has a very distinct personality and that seems to bleed over to some of the other characters at times.

The narrator seems to struggle a bit with her mic peaking and not understanding character reactions

Over all well worth a read!
