About this listen
Lieutenant Eve Dallas returns in a fast-paced new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb.
Nature versus nurture...
The shots came quickly, silently, and with deadly accuracy. Within seconds, three people were dead at Central Park's ice skating rink. The victims: a talented young skater, a doctor, and a teacher. As random as random can be.
Eve Dallas has seen a lot of killers during her time with the NYPSD, but never one like this. After reviewing security videos, it becomes clear that the victims were killed by a sniper firing a tactical laser rifle, who could have been miles away when the trigger was pulled. And though the locations where the shooter could have set up seem endless, the list of people with that particular skill set is finite: police, military, professional killer.
Eve's husband, Roarke, has unlimited resources - and genius - at his disposal. And when his computer program leads Eve to the location of the sniper, she learns a shocking fact: There were two - one older, one younger. Someone is being trained by an expert in the science of killing, and they have an agenda. Central Park was just a warm-up. And as another sniper attack shakes the city to its core, Eve realizes that though we're all shaped by the people around us, there are those who are just born evil....
©2016 Nora Roberts (P)2016 Brilliance Audio, all rights reserved. So sad the sheer amount of unwarranted deaths in this, due to one person being unable to accept the truth about an accident.
Having a psychotic child manipulate that impaired person to allow these atrocities to be committed.
One death, the anniversary couple, is especially hard and is worse than the others.
2021 UPDATED BOOK REVIEW
If you count the novellas we are further on than book 43.
I think what stands out in this one is that the killer is themselves a child but definitely a manipulative one in how she played on the fathers breakdown.
The father will have a long time to think on his stupidity and his sins, I hope he is weaned of the funk so he has clarity about what he has allowed to happen.
But the child is a lost cause and needs to remain locked up forever.
Once again the deaths of these innocent people was upsetting.
The anniversary couple especially due to the news the wife had planned as a surprise for her husband. The birthday boy and his poor mother and the young police officer.
Great to have Officer Shelby join the homicide squad.
Eve’s office remodel shows she has stepped away from her past and I loved Bella’s birthday party scene.
I have owned most of these books in paperback for years but now have them all in eBook format, so I am rereading this series once more in order, updating and replacing missing reviews.
Even knowing what is in the future, it is absolutely no hardship to reread this series and I am really enjoying how all the characters are growing and changing.
ORIGINAL BOOK REVIEW
This is book 43 and this series is still as gripping as book one was, that says it all to me.
Once again Eve has to take down a child killer, what makes this even sadder is the fact the killers trainer is one of their own.
Whilst I felt sorry for what Reginald had been through, the fact he could not deal with an accident being the cause of his loss started a domino effect that affected too many innocents, thus enabling Willow to do what she did and boy, she really wanted to do it.
I had tears for the young couple at the skating rink reliving their first date and the 17 year old on his birthday.
The ending where Eve had the killer in interrogation was so involved I felt like I was part of it. The mind of a psychopath is shown in stark reality; it is all about them.
This is as always a riveting story with all our favourites characters taking part in another action and emotion filled case.
So sad when listening to this one.

Would you listen to Apprentice in Death again? Why?
Yes certainly. I love all the books and characters in this series and often listen to them again and again. What did you like best about this story?
I like the interesting plot line. The creepy personality of the Apprentice is fascinating as so well done. What does Susan Ericksen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I enjoy Susan Ericksen's performances on all of the books she reads. She paints a very interesting word picture of all the characters. The different voices are perfectly suited to characters as I imagine them to be.Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I did have an emotional reaction to the book. I felt sorry for the sibling and mother and step-father of the apprentice. I also always enjoy the wonderfully done connection between Rorke and Eve. The scene between Rorke, Eve and Summerset is very emotional.Any additional comments?
This writer is always sure to please. The series has been running for so long I keep thinking that it will lose its impact but thankfully it never does. Keep up the good work.Continuing with this excellent series

If you're new to the NYPSD, you should start with book 1. You won't fully understand what the rest of us take for granted. This is a whole new world. But equally as dangerous as the 21st century.
Enjoyable futuristic & Personable
