About this listen

This book is geared to the average citizen with little or no economics background who would like the tools to think critically about economic issues. Many of today's economic issues are obscured by their inherent complexity and the often confusing and conflicting views coming from political talking heads. Sowell, a leading conservative economist and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, seeks to alleviate this confusion. He begins by elucidating the differences between politicians, who are often compelled by political considerations to act for the short term, and economists, who are more concerned with long-term ramifications. Sowell then focuses on the application of economics to major contemporary real-world problems - housing, medical care, discrimination, and the economic development of nations.

I enjoyed listening to this book. It reinforces the themes in Basic Economics by the same author and does a good job of focusing the discourse in a smaller set of economic issues. I liked the examples that bring the points alive -especially the global nature of examples (as opposed to just US-focused ones). The narration was good too. I initially felt like I much preferred the narrator for Basic Economics but I grew to enjoy the voice of this narrator too. Overall, good value and good use of my time.

Loved it!

Good focus on “beyond stage 1” throughout. A solid, precise work. Not as wide-reaching, nor as powerful as some of his other stuff.

Good follow-on from Basic Economics

Thomas Sowell is brilliant, and this book is true to his usual style and quality.

However, most of the information here is a repeat of his other, larger books.

Same old Sowell
