Summary

This book is geared to the average citizen with little or no economics background who would like the tools to think critically about economic issues. Many of today's economic issues are obscured by their inherent complexity and the often confusing and conflicting views coming from political talking heads. Sowell, a leading conservative economist and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, seeks to alleviate this confusion. He begins by elucidating the differences between politicians, who are often compelled by political considerations to act for the short term, and economists, who are more concerned with long-term ramifications. Sowell then focuses on the application of economics to major contemporary real-world problems - housing, medical care, discrimination, and the economic development of nations.

Same old Sowell

Thomas Sowell is brilliant, and this book is true to his usual style and quality.

However, most of the information here is a repeat of his other, larger books.

Loved it!

I enjoyed listening to this book. It reinforces the themes in Basic Economics by the same author and does a good job of focusing the discourse in a smaller set of economic issues. I liked the examples that bring the points alive -especially the global nature of examples (as opposed to just US-focused ones). The narration was good too. I initially felt like I much preferred the narrator for Basic Economics but I grew to enjoy the voice of this narrator too. Overall, good value and good use of my time.

Clear and well argued

In characteristic Thomas Sowell fashion, this book is clear, engaging, and well argued, with every assertion backed up by facts or examples.

Confusing

this is very confusing. I don't know exactly what this book was about. Sometimes it's just free market capitalism propaganda, sometimes history, sometimes general economics.
I definitely don't recommend this to anyone.

A Macroscopic Lens Of Economic Distribution

To better grasp economic concepts and the ways in which sustainable wealth is acquired and distributed, common applications of structural monetary trends that both encourage and deter the flow of resources within a market should be animated in such a way, that the explanation of its execution process become vividly understood. Hands down, this book achieves that goal. AE is the purview on managing Economic Resource Accumulation. A Must Read for all interested in better knowing Economics within its range of real-world applications.

Lots of history covered throughout the world which sites many specific economic examples, impacts, and policies. A must read! The analysis is still relevant today. Should be required reading for every high school economics or social studies classes.
