Summary

A remote island. A new age cult. A bad trip.

Like an episode of Black Mirror washed up on the shores of The Wicker Man’s Summerisle, this immersive and twisting novel plunges into moody landscapes, dubious histories, and glitchy technotopian futurism—telling the story of a slacker teetering on the edge, and a community about to lose its collective mind.

Doug Shasta: underemployed, divorced, a couple low-key substance dependencies. You wouldn’t say things are going great. But it’s all how look at it. He’s got good friends, and his kids have a decent life on remote Sternum Island, in the placid Pacific Northwest.

When one of his oldest friends disappears, Doug falls into an increasingly strange reality lurking just beyond the forest’s edge—an island possessed by ancient spirits, the legacy of Cold War mind-control experiments, and a new-age retreat populated by wellness influencers and filthy-rich tech gurus schilling cryptocurrency and live-streamed enlightenment.

Nate Budzinski’s writing has been published by Frieze, ArtReview, The Wire music magazine, among others. He grew up in the Pacific Northwest and now lives in Copenhagen.
