In a small town in Sweden it appears to be an ordinary day. But look more closely, and you'll see a mysterious masked figure approaching a bank...

Two hours later, chaos has descended. A bungled attempted robbery has developed into a hostage situation - and the offender is refusing to communicate their demands to the police.

Within the building, fear quickly turns to irritation for the seven strangers trapped inside. If this is to be their last day on earth, shouldn't it be a bit more dramatic?

But as the minutes tick by, they begin to suspect that the criminal mastermind holding them hostage might be more in need of rescuing than they are...

Another smash hit . . . With Backman's stunning characters combined with a closed-room mystery, this has all of the ingredients for a novel all your friends will be talking about (Shane Mullen)
A surprisingly sweet tale. It's the perfect balance of heartwarming and heart-wrenching, and Fredrik Backman [...] has a way of simply yet elegantly describing relationships. We can all be idiots, but we're still all human beings worthy of connection and love

I loved this book so much. My first book by Fredrick Bacman but I have added him now to the list of authors to follow and have added his other books to my reading list. I love his writing style, his sense of humour, the way he observes people.
The narration by Marin Ireland was excellent too.
My favourite quote:
"The truth of course is that if people really were as happy as they look on the Internet, they wouldn’t spend so much damn time on the Internet, because no one who’s having a really good day spends half of it taking pictures of themselves. Anyone can nurture a myth about their life if they have enough manure, so if the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence, that’s probably because it’s full of shit."

Excellent

A beautiful story about life and all its complexities. I love Fredrik Backman’s books, this one is just as wonderful as the others - be prepared to laugh and cry!

Yet another brilliantly written Backman book. It was a treat to put my headphones and lose myself to the story. I didn’t want it to end and the book and all it’s wonderful characters have stayed with me weeks later. This is the book I’ll be recommending to everyone. Can’t wait for his next book as I’ve now read them all.

Recommended by a family member (whose last rec was a shocker) so I started reluctantly, was of two minds for a while and then, after I got used to some of the annoying characters, got sucked in 100%. I liked the going back and forth in time perspective and I suspect my emotions towards, and opinions of, each character were exactly what the author intended. There were minor plot twists along the way and a clever one towards the end. what I liked most was that the author took the time to tie up all the loose ends when the main plot was over. Not often I give 5 stars but this one thoroughly deserved it. 👍🏼

Loved it.... surprisingly !

I've never written a review before but this book really spoke to me. I laughed and cried, beautifully written and beautifully narrated. I don't want to give anything away but I wish I was there as I think everyone of us can relate to at least one character in the story, I'm guessing though more. Loved it.

A beautiful book.
